I host a lot of wordpress sites for friends, family and business and one thing I’ve noticed is the collection of spam on some of these sites because they either don’t want to use the provided spam plugins, don’t maintain the plugins or just simply don’t care about their blog anymore.
Something I do regularly on my site but neglected to run on the other sites is running a SQL to delete the comments marked as spam in the comments table.

I’d recommend reading this illogical post from Duncan at Techcrunch and then rally around Matt in the comments section.
After reading all of Duncan’s and Matt’s comments I had to throw my two-cents in,
Duncan: I don’t see your point. You mention that Matt can’t have it both ways but by writing this article and placing *your* issues into a “gray area” you’re rewarding your terms with two-ways to lean; neither for or against, making you’re actually opinion irrelevant. And isn’t this just…
GMail having it’s junkmail filter go down every other day is really annoying. Not only because I have to go through the hundreds of e-mails making sure I don’t mark real mail as spam but it’s crazy to see your BB filled with 200+ e-mails that I now have to mark for deletion or as read. I guess I take GMail for granted because what did we do before great spam filtering; now that I think about it I should…
What just happened in the last hour? All that spam hit specifically *@dancameron.org.
I wonder what happened to gmail to let that many slide. Maybe it had something to do with the time but I haven’t had that much spam pass through the filter ever, even if you add up all of it together.
After asking Nathan what he uses for spam blocking he surprised me with the answer of “nothing”. It turns out he uses the built in WP2 function “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”. I turned this on Sunday so those few spams that pass Akismet would just stop in moderation and the few commenters that don’t have already approved comments would have to wait a couple hours before I approve them. Well it turns out that the built in…
Jared and I have been emailing each other about Akismet and how he prefers Spam Karma 2 over it and all I have to say is Akismet is better much better.
He says that it doesn’t take long to setup and that’s true for both but if you want the full capability to work for Spam Karma you need to roll up your sleeves, where as Akimet you do not. And I would assume that it processes more spam a minute then…
Is there any real reason to still have nofollow on in Wordpress with the great comment spam blockers like Akismet and Spam Karma 2?
If you agree go an download DoFollow.
Sara learned a lesson last night when she clicked on the link to this email. Thinking it was eBay asking to update her info she clicked the link. She then proceeded to enter her username and password not noticing that Safari showed the actual URL, an ip address. Step 1 of the scam was accomplished.
She then wised up and asked me about the page when it asked for her credit card info, I was pissed/surprised/disappointed. I thought how she could…
I’ve been using GMail as my spam filter for the last couple months and am pleasently surprised, it sorts on average 400 spam messages every 30 days and only 2 a month get by. With all my mail going thorugh gmail I not only get a great backup but quick webmail. One of the easiest ways to make sure email gets filtered out is tagging. Yes tagging, something I never heard about ’till recently.
How to tag: So my gmail is dancameron[at]gmail.com…
The Real Nick W writes “Wordpress, an incredibly popular Open Source Blogging system was found to be spamming google by inserting hidden links to junk content on high paying Adsense keywords such as mesothelioma and debt consolidation. Following Threadwatch picking up the story an anonymous Google rep appeared in the original thread admonishing bloggers not to use sneaky tactics to rank highly for “duplicate content” such as the 100,000 hidden articles on the Wordpress site. The articles have now dissapeared from Google and it remains…
