If you're looking for an older version of Quicktime 7.1.4 can be found here or you can simply just search apple.com for another. Following these directions to boot OS X from a USB drive I was able to modify the AppleTV filesystem to enable SSH. Running SSH allows for just about anything:
Added Quicktime components to enable DivX, Xvid, WMV and just about anything else. #
Added a plugin to browse files on the AppleTV. Otherwise you won't be able to play those DivX and Xvid files. #
Ran a afp:// mount in order to browse the media files on another system/server. #
Enable VNC. #
I can't wait for some more plugins. I might install the RSS plugin if they get video RSS rolled into it.
I have ...
After just a few days of using the Apple TV I'm thoroughly impressed. The major reason I purchased the Apple TV was because of all the hacking that's been going on and with Apple practically saying, "it's your box do what you will" we can expect some more great hacks, if running full OS X wasn't enough. I had planned at least to install some Xvid/divX playback through a very simple hack but involves cracking the case open. Instead of jumping right into doing that I've instead planned to just use it as intended.
I already live out of iTunes so ...
The new iPod video formatting is extremely hard to follow and hopefully this review will help. I created it because I just wanted to put the highest quality video on my 5g video iPod for playback on a TV.
DVD Ripping
The first hurdle was finding the app that would rip my DVDs to H.264. I used Instant Handbrake (with the unofficial icons of course) in the past, but as you might know it rips the DVDs in the old file size of 320x240, half the resolution as the new 640x480. The full version of Handbrake does allow for h.264 encoding at ...
To follow up with my previous post, I'm surprised at how close I was.
They announced iTunes 7 with movies
They announced the new Nano's with new casing and sizes
They announced new iPods with a new size increase
They did release an update to Quicktime but nothing substantial like I mentioned
And what I wanted to see was a Media Extender and they pre-announced it. The thing looks awesome and I would consider it if it did xvid and divx streaming, which I doubt. Because if I'm going to convert something I might as well convert it to a DVD or something. I'm also ...
runtime360 is way better then the previous software I linked to in the earlier post about streaming Xvid and DivX to the 360. This time it's easier to install, easier to use, has more features and is more powerful. Since it uses FFMpeg to transcode the files it handles a lot more codecs, including Quicktime.
Now all I do is use iTunes to manage all my videocasts and then I just press a couple buttons to start runtime and it's playing. I can pause, skip, back up and stop it with the remote just like a normal WMV would play.
Now I'm ...
