1. Zombieland Review

I never liked any zombie movies until now, especially serious zombie movies. The only non-comedic zombie I would rate higher than a three is 28 days later but that’s only because its more of a horror movie than a zombie flick.

The other two zombie movies I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and the Evil Dead, both totally different, were good/great. ( Of course, I haven’t seen Evil Dead since I was a kid and even then I think I saw the sequels first, either way I thought they were … Read More »

  2. The Time Traveler’s Wife

Short and sweet: the story is amazing and I bet the book is way better than the movie. The only thing that kept me intrigued was thinking about time traveling and how awesome the plot/story was. … Read More »

  3. Funny People Review

Funny People is a funny movie. There are some of the greatest comedians in this movie and because the movie’s plot allows for real actors to portray themselves ( stand-up, ect. ) its perfect to cram them in without being distracting or messy.

If you’ve seen a preview you know Sandler is terminally ill and you can guess he starts soul searching and finds a girl; well, don’t get disappointed there’s definitely more to it and without spoiling anything I loved how it unfolded.

Even if you don’t like Sandler’s style of comedy, … Read More »

  4. Surrogates (2009) Review

The premise of the movie is simple: everyone uses a robot to live out their daily life. I have mixed feelings about this movie; I really liked the plot but I couldn’t enjoy the story the movie presented.

The robotic acting was a little overboard at times, it seemed like the actors just didn’t know how to express at certain times and actions and reactions were not consistent. This ended up being distracting and contributed to me not liking the movie as much as I’d would have liked.

After watching this movie, my … Read More »

  5. Cloverfield

I have a rather mixed review of the movie.

I liked the movie but I just don’t know how to accept it. I acknowledge the fact that it wasn’t a monster movie, I understood that it was a shaky cam movie and I expected the mystery that J.J. Abrams demands. I just can’t say it was a “great” movie.

I would say that it was a “good” film and I was glad to see it but in a few weeks it’ll be forgettable until I want to see it again on DVD. I mention it as a “film” because it had a lot of depth, charactor development and a sense of connection. At least that’s how I see it.

I do hope everyone who is thinking about seeing Cloverfield does, especially in the theaters.  It was a good film, not a good action flick, but a film.

    [minor spoiler alert]

I’m suspecting that they’re going to position it for sequels. Since the movie’s secondary plot was the monster they could easily create another with the monster backdrop, by simply tagging the script at the beginning. A sequel would catch my interest a lot, I’d even be excited for a sequel with the military vantage point whether it finished with the monster plot or not.

  6. iLife and iWork ‘08

    iWork 08

Yesterday I posted about Numbers and I shyed away from posting about the other two apps in iWork ‘08; Pages and Keynote because the only thing out of those two apps that’s worth mentioning is “action builds” for Keynote.

Action builds is a very cool feature and to have it in a presentation software makes me say “finally”. Keynote has had animations in previous versions but not like this. Instead of building the motion in another application like Flash or Final Cut you can just create simple paths for our objects and build it within Keynote. The video reminds me of the few hours I’ve spent in Flash.

    iLife ‘08

I don’t have any first hand use because I’m going to wait a few months for Leopard (since it’s bundled for free). But from the demos and the Apple press conference the new features are needed and the overhaul of iMovie was necessary. iMovie (Pre-08 ) although very simple and clean was abandoned after I purchased Final Cut Pro even though I don’t like editing in Final Cut Pro for home movies or short clips iMovie was just not cutting it.

Until I get the new version I’m not going to decide whether it’s as phenomenal as the Apple’s presentation makes it out to be or the demos on their site provide. Especially since people are already revolting from the new app and going back to the old iMovie. From what I’ve seen it’s a drastic improvement. I love the exporting options including direct to YouTube.

What I’m really looking forward to in the new iMovie is how it’s an actual video library now. Before importing clips into the project prevented me from wanting to make videos at all and almost every movie production application works that way. Now I can just import all of my DV into the application, easily scan through all of that video and simply create what I’ve promised Sara for so long.

Another notable feature coming is event sorting. Found in iPhoto it’s going to make it so much easier for our family to sort through the thousands of photos and make it easier to organize. It’s an outstanding way to organization and it’s a shame we don’t see it in any other application including flickr.

  7. Transformers

More than meets the eye. It was pure eye candy tonight at the theater; the effects and action were non-stop and was a real exciting movie to watch. The sound effects we’re perfect but the dialog was lacking. If it weren’t for the constant half sentence punch lines that made me laugh in the beginning and later made me annoyed it would have been one of my favorite action movies. Now it’s just a fun popcorn movie just in time for the 4th of July summer time weather that forces people to pay $10 for a movie because of the free air conditioning.

I’m a fan of Bay’s action but after thinking about his past movies I really don’t think he can make a meaningful relation happen on screen. The main character was way more in love with BumbleBee than he was with the hat chick in the movie. And I never took film school but I know relationship conflicts need to happen to build relationships within a movie but if it happens over a 3 minute span that includes horrible dialog take that shi# out of the movie, it’s unnecessary.

Other than the dialog (that I anticipated to be worse) the movie was great. I found I don’t like rating movies on a number scale anymore, so I’ll say it’s worth the full box office price because of the effects and large sound.

  8. Google is Sicko

I was going to post my opinion about the anti-Sicko Michael Moore post someone at Google posted a couple days back but now they recanted and I just read a perfect summary and report from MA at TechCrunch.

The movie, Turner said, “fails to show healthcare’s interest in patient well-being and care.” More than a few people disagree with that statement, and were immediately turned off by Turner’s comments. Particularly since there was a clear profit motive to the post – getting more advertising dollars.

Knowing how rampant blogging is over at Google it’s just crazy to see there are no policies in order to censer the employees. Censoring has some very negative connotations but without it for corporate blogging a single person that gravely misrepresent an entire company with thousands of employees.

  9. Surf’s Up

Avery and I went to go see Surfs up tonight and it’s definitely in my top 5 of CG/cartoon movies. I never thought a non-pixar movie would be in there so soon but it was a pretty stellar movie. Not to go deep: it’s story is average but the effects and shrek style humor are fun.

The special effects are awesome, someone that has lived in a California beach town throughout his life  and grew up surfing (body boarding) I really appreciated the accuracy of how well the waves looked and behaved. Like Big Z I was all about the big wave tubes and watching a penguin and a chicken surf was surprisingly pleasing.

I definitely need to get some of my video online. In order to reminise my teen years that were so long ago.

  10. AICN

Thanks BB for pointing out the trailer for Rambo IV and The Sarah Conner Chronicles. I’m not sure what to say about Rambo since the movie needs some polishing unless they intend to go straight to DVD, either way it looks like the whole movie was shown in that 3.5 minutes.

The Terminator show seems pretty cool but the how long can a show go on without any mystery or plot line that makes you want to see what’s around the corner. The entire story looks like empty with just run and fight and then run again.
