I was just about to update the flickr video post on how easy it was to embed the video but instead I have to say I’m really enjoying the new release of Wordpress.
I haven’t used it enough to write a full post, which I won’t, but everything I’ve tried to do is either much easier than before or greatly improved. Like embeding that flash video, it was as simple as: clicking html, pasting, clicking visual again in the editor, finishing the post and publishing. Adding video before this was more painful than listening to Steve Gillmor talk about the “Reader Exploit” or how “wonderful Twitter” is.
I do see WP 2.5 as one of their flagship releases, even if I’m starting to be a little pessimistic about how open-source it may or may not be.
Ever since we started using flickr, in 2005, I had been anticipating this day to come…3 years later flickr added video support. It’s clearly not a youtube competitor and I’m glad its not, they can keep their social/viral/hilarious video.
Even though YouTube has more to offer, only because it’s pioneering and trying to keep ahead in that space, flickr will host most of our video.
flickr is our online “scrap book”/photo-album and since our events, the iPhoto term, include video its only natural to keep them all in one place.
Testing out the feature I found nothing special. It’s the same as uploading images, only I can’t upload the video through the flickr uploader yet.
There are some limitations:
90 seconds
150MB
But like I mentioned this is for my still-camera video in relation to events, which almost always fill that criteria.
I’ve embeded our first uploaded video to this post [crossing fingers] with praise to flickr for finally getting off their ass and doing something great for the community/users of flickr and don’t worry youtube I’ll use you as much as I do now and I’m sure everyone else will do the same.
Yesterday I posted about Numbers and I shyed away from posting about the other two apps in iWork ‘08; Pages and Keynote because the only thing out of those two apps that’s worth mentioning is “action builds” for Keynote.
Action builds is a very cool feature and to have it in a presentation software makes me say “finally”. Keynote has had animations in previous versions but not like this. Instead of building the motion in another application like Flash or Final Cut you can just create simple paths for our objects and build it within Keynote. The video reminds me of the few hours I’ve spent in Flash.
iLife ‘08
I don’t have any first hand use because I’m going to wait a few months for Leopard (since it’s bundled for free). But from the demos and the Apple press conference the new features are needed and the overhaul of iMovie was necessary. iMovie (Pre-08 ) although very simple and clean was abandoned after I purchased Final Cut Pro even though I don’t like editing in Final Cut Pro for home movies or short clips iMovie was just not cutting it.
Until I get the new version I’m not going to decide whether it’s as phenomenal as the Apple’s presentation makes it out to be or the demos on their site provide. Especially since people are already revolting from the new app and going back to the old iMovie. From what I’ve seen it’s a drastic improvement. I love the exporting options including direct to YouTube.
What I’m really looking forward to in the new iMovie is how it’s an actual video library now. Before importing clips into the project prevented me from wanting to make videos at all and almost every movie production application works that way. Now I can just import all of my DV into the application, easily scan through all of that video and simply create what I’ve promised Sara for so long.
Another notable feature coming is event sorting. Found in iPhoto it’s going to make it so much easier for our family to sort through the thousands of photos and make it easier to organize. It’s an outstanding way to organization and it’s a shame we don’t see it in any other application including flickr.
I just wanted to post how great our vacation trip was last week. The camping trip un-tethered me from the internet enough to give Google Reader some time off too. I have plenty of flickr photos of the trip and some of me wakeboarding, yes I know, I can’t wakeboard. Well, I can’t wakeboard … Read More »
I’m purging my online identity to just a few locations that I actually use since it was getting out of control. The major account escape that led to the purge was myspace, as you might have noticed if I’m a friend of yours. The others include:
tumblr – It’s a great “blog” service that compiles a lot of your online feeds into one online log. I liked the idea but it’s not something I see people using (for me) since if their my friend they can see my feed at facebook.
last.fm – I never used this as much as I wanted. I think it still get’s my iPod updates but that will stop very soon.
myspace – Not only did I rarely use myspace I never liked it, I actually hated it. The navigation is obnoxious to say the least and facebook is now my “social network” of choice.
CoComment – An awesome idea especially since I originally had the idea a long time ago. But I find that it doesn’t work very well unless the blog integrate it (which is a very few).
digg.com – Ever since the DVD hex code debacle I’ve come to the conclusion that community is a bunch of childish kids; and the founders aren’t making it any better.
On the chopping block
Newsvine – Wonderful news site that should have replaced digg but where digg strives in minimalism (for those kids) newsvine is too cluttered with content.
aim – If I could I’d shut it off now but some people still use it.
del.icio.us – This is one of those services that I love but I’m just not using it. Namely becuase I can’t stand having it clogged up with bookmarks I know I’ll never comeback to. I’m also curious to find out if Google bookmarks is going to incorporate into Google Reader since I do star a lot of feeds already.
The ones I’ll keep:
This site (of course) – It’s my ultimate online presence.
Twitter – Something that’s already a major extension of this site for mobile/short posts and is integrated into my next service…
Facebook – I’m a new user but I’m definitely enjoying myself. And with the apps I can play and develop at the same time. Better yet I can include my other online presences into one, just like my blog.
With Christmas coming with one night’s sleep I’d like to thank all of you. Not the “you” that Time magazine refers to but the people that actually read my site or know me personally that don’t bother to come here because I geek out too much. Thank you.
We’ve had a great year and these last few days have followed suit. We’re just relaxing and enjoying it. I’ve posted nothing just keeping up with my feeds and e-mail on the downtime and I’m surprised. Normally I’d be filling more time on the computer. Instead it’s here and there and loving my girls and enjoying the view.
The picture below was taken last night at some garden of lights thing here in Boise. It’s not great but the only one with us three that looked presentable enough. The rest are coming to flickr soon.
I played around for a few minutes with flickr’s geotagging and I’m impressed. The yahoo1 maps are identical to Google maps so it’s really easy to use. I can’t wait to chronical a big trip. … Read More »
The short story,
I had planned out this project for a while thinking it would take three weeks. One week of demolish, One week of finishing up and one for the install. Turns out it only took one and a half days.
Saturday I started early demolishing and was finished before 10am. 10am to 2pm we had all the finishing touches done in order to install the sprinkler. 2pm to about 5 I just cleaned up everything.
Sunday morning, Sara Avery woke me up early after a full night of poker and I noticed the sprinkler worked giving the the option to install the sod. I went to green thumb and Rent-it to bring the sod home. I installed it fairly easily.
now we just have to keep it soaked and make sure Avery doesn’t mess with it too much.
All done. Wow that wasn’t too bad at all [my mind]. I hurt [my body]. Let’s play and have a BBQ [Avery].
$60 for a dumpster
$25 for cement and sprinkler supplies
$115 for the sod and truck
= Priceless laughs from Avery
[appended] I forgot to say that I’m not completely finished either. I still have to do some minor cement work since I ran out and we have to coat the fence with paint/seal. I’ll probably get that done next weekend.
The day Google implements this is the day I leave flickr. Oh, they’d need to increase the limit on storage too, right now it’s at 250mb which is very strange for google who usually breaks the storage barrier. … Read More »
