Thinking about making individual repos for client projects instead of using a master repo. All for client access and hooking into basecamp. 3 hrs ago
This somewhat requires you’ve followed my suggestions on not committing yourself to a certain host or your own DNS or mail servers, if not the extra steps might take you 10 more minutes, maybe days.
There are plenty of ways to migrate to a new server depending on how you’ve setup the server or your host, these are just to show the simplicity of my migrations after following the post linked above.
Step 1:
Rsync your other server’s files to the new…
There has already been a long debate about hosting your own DNS servers and mail servers but I’ve found once again relying on Godaddy total DNS management and using GoDaddy e-mail forwarding has made my three migrations over the last year a breeze. So I suggest to everyone:
Suggestion One:
Don’t mix your host and your registrar. You might not see your domain again.
For anyone looking to create their own site I urge you, never register your domain with your host. There…
Migrated all of my sites right now to the new server. It took just about 15 since I already ran the rsync a few times already and the mysql dump went through already. If any of my sites are not coming through it’s most likely becuase of DNS cache and you should see them first thing in the morning. [Link] (0)
One of the first things I did on my Media Tempe (dv) was install webmin because I’m a huge fan of easy it let’s you manage your web/server, e.g. web interface to quickly change config files or restart particular services without having to login through SSH.
A more official description:
Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to…
Found my first GoDaddy DNS limitation: multiple nameservers for a subdomain. Which Rackspace won’t do and I’ve never even heard of doing tha
After posting this on Twitter:
Whoever is recommending dotster for hosting and domains please stop. Sorry, but if you’re not ignorant you’re an idiot.
Jared asked, “What’s wrong with Dotster?”. LOL, I had forgotten he uses it.
I was requested to setup a client’s outlook to receive email from one of his many domains he purchased through Dotster today and I anticipated it to take a few minutes since he already had a server/hosted plan. Nope, it took forever and I found out a…
It’s bad to remember how to flush DNS in windows and not know what to do in OS X, when it’s your main system.
Windows:
C:>ipconfig /flushdns
OS X command
bash$ lookupd -flushcache
Linux:
$/etc/rc.d/init.d/nscd restart
TechCrunch has a good review on OpenDNS which led me to try it out, even though the article weighs more on not using the service. I’ve just configured my laptop to use it via it’s wireless connection, I plan to test it out and decide later if I should change our router.
The company has two primary selling points. The first is its phishing filter, a list of malicious sites aggregated by a number of different sources that are blocked when access is…
I’m having some serious DNS issues and how I have to have the www prefix for the domain to even work. And I have all my dns settings on default. What’s even stranger is Sara’s site is working only without the www prefix. And here DNS settings are default; with www.crazysox.net. CNAME crazysox.net and even *.crazysox.net. CNAME crazysox.net. doesn’t work.
I’ve tried everything: Browser cache (which is why I never saw this earlier), server reset, apache restart, dns restart. I’ve had…
