1. Gmail filtering and FROM address for iPhone e-mail

Since I have such an elaberate setup for email:

    •  I have a Google Apps Premier Account
    • I forward all of my email from my major domains to the Google Apps account
    • I have a few other Gmail accounts that forward to the GA account
    • I also have all work e-mail forwarded to the GA account for archiving, accessibility and searching

The iPhone allows for makes setting up e-mail so easy for a normal GMail account, even Google Apps accounts work through the basic “GMail” setup but there are a few problems:

    • The default account is not used. Meaning your reply-to or from address will be defaulted to @gmail.com, @yahoo.com or the @googleappsdomain.com.
    • No filtering

iphone-emailOne problem just creates the other for me, since I could always just use pop for the GA account the reply to would be setup correctly but I would be getting too much e-mail–including a double of my work e-mail–(since I have IMAP setup for work on another account on the iPhone) so a filter is necessary.

Also a lot of people might want to change that “From:” address if using one of the other methods of e-mail accounts on the iPhone.

    Filtering:

    • Create another GMail account that wont ever be used.
    • Filter the e-mail you want to be sent to the newly created  GMail account.
    • Use the POP method below instead of using the default “Gmail” setup

    From/Reply-to change:
On the iPhone create an “other” e-mail account, the type will be POP3.

    Settings>Mail>Add Account>Other
Choose “Pop” out of IMAP, POP and Exchange buttons.

For the “Account Information” give your real “Name” and for your “Address” give the FROM address you really want to use. The key here is that you can now specify a FROM “Address” which is NOT defaulted to your Yahoo!, GMail or AIM account.

  2. Goodbye…

I’m purging my online identity to just a few locations that I actually use since it was getting out of control. The major account escape that led to the purge was myspace, as you might have noticed if I’m a friend of yours. The others include:

    • tumblr – It’s a great “blog” service that compiles a lot of your online feeds into one online log. I liked the idea but it’s not something I see people using (for me) since if their my friend they can see my feed at facebook.
    • last.fm – I never used this as much as I wanted. I think it still get’s my iPod updates but that will stop very soon.
    • myspace – Not only did I rarely use myspace I never liked it, I actually hated it. The navigation is obnoxious to say the least and facebook is now my  “social network” of choice.
    • virb – I was pushed into using it.
    • CoComment – An awesome idea especially since I originally had the idea a long time ago. But I find that it doesn’t work very well unless the blog integrate it (which is a very few).
    • digg.com – Ever since the DVD hex code debacle I’ve come to the conclusion that community is a bunch of childish kids; and the founders aren’t making it any better.

    On the chopping block

    • Newsvine – Wonderful news site that should have replaced digg but where digg strives in minimalism (for those kids) newsvine is too cluttered with content.
    • aim – If I could I’d shut it off now but some people still use it.
    • del.icio.us – This is one of those services that I love but I’m just not using it. Namely becuase I can’t stand having it clogged up with bookmarks I know I’ll never comeback to. I’m also curious to find out if Google bookmarks is going to incorporate into Google Reader since I do star a lot of feeds already.

    The ones I’ll keep:

    • This site (of course) – It’s my ultimate online presence.
    • Twitter – Something that’s already a major extension of this site for mobile/short posts and is integrated into my next service…
    • Facebook – I’m a new user but I’m definitely enjoying myself. And with the apps I can play and develop at the same time. Better yet I can include my other online presences into one, just like my blog.
    • Flickr – I wont be leaving flickr anytime soon.
    • Google Reader Shared – Something that I’m sure no one is subscribed to but I love putting it out there for the one who might.
    • Google Talk – I’m one GTalk 24/7 through my BB and I love the features and client. Chat history rocks.

There are more but as you can tell there are way to many listed already.

  3. GMail

I’ve been using GMail’s multiple ’send as’ accounts ever since they opened up the option, it’s become very usefull especially now on a trip. I’m able to send work e-mail through gmail without anyone even noticing I’m not logging into exchange or our mail server. The huge problem is signatures. Every so often I forget to replace the defualt signature with my work’s (through copy/paste) and it shows all of my personal info; aim and my BLOG. There’s a greasemonkey script out there but I rather not bother unless I have to. For now I’ve made my signature just my name, can’t do wrong with that.

Google: You hear me? This is a problem not a feature request. I shouldn’t have to tell you multiple accounts means different profiles/identities.

  4. BlackBerry 7130c First Impressions

My BlackBerry 7130c arrived today and my first impressions are that it’s awesome. When would I buy something that wasn’t? The first thing I had to do was call cingular to get the business data connection rather then the medianet unlimited plan since it’s not compatible for some reason. It wasn’t such a problem this morning but I called tonight to change the service into a cheaper plan and I was on the phone for 30 minutes, it was the most frustrating call I’ve been on for some time.

The first 5 apps that I installed were Google Maps, Google Talk, Opera Mini, BB Messenger and BB 411. Google Maps is pretty cool, I’ve used it and Opera mini before on my other phones so they’re not new to me. BB Messenger although not supported by cingular works fine and is so useful at work since T and B have them too. BB 411 is a “great” info app and I haven’t used it much so I can’t say too much.

Google Talk on the blackberry is a must. I love my blackberry more then any other phone just because of this app, it’s so great. It doesn’t do much more then do IM but it integrates with other parts of the phone which is pretty cool. The reason I like it so much is because the people I really want to talk to or the people I don’t mind talking use gtalk (I’m not saying that I don’t want to talk to you who don’t use gtalk, I’m just saying my AIM is so cluttered with people I rather not be “available” or even “away”). So gtalk is awesome, if you don’t use it you should (Jared: it uses jabber so you can use gaim).

As for the OS it’s extremely stable and I’ve never seen this one nor my old work BB crash, ever.

  5. GMail and GTalk

Integrated chat is awesome and reply by chat is also a great addition. Only if they would use that partnership with AOL a little and get AIM involved with GTalk. But to review GMail I really can’t there’s just so many good things about it that the list would be too long..

I rarely use GTalk and I find myself only using it within GMail. Even though I have iChat setup for for GTalk I rarely use it and I’ve stopped turning it on because of that. As I said above, if they integrated AIM or AIM integrated GTalk like AIM currently does for .mac it would really take off and the voip portion might even be used.

  6. Aim Pages released

Here is my page. With only 5 minutes of tinkering, AIM pages rocks Myspace. Designing the pages is extremely easy but don’t expect clean looking pages the flexibility still allows for the worst of designs, the designs we love to see at ms. The interface allows you to move “modules” around to design the layout, similar to Google pages, a couple that stood out were for YouTube and De.licio.us and I’d expect more since you can create your own and share them as “user created”.

As soon as AOL figures out the music solution for bands and whatever Myspace is good for I’d like to see Aim pages take over, it’s just seems that AOL is a better suitor for teen social networking then Fox’s myspace.

  7. AIM Pages: First Screenshot

AIM Pages looks to be a real “Myspace killer”.
    Two reasons:
    1. Parents don’t mind the name because AOL is already known as family friendly.
    2. The pages don’t look like crap. … Read More »

  9. Gmail chat

Wow. This is going to be fun.

I really hope they get AIM involved in this somehow because I don’t know anyone that uses gtalk, but I guess there are a lot of people who I know who use GMail, or do I?

  10. Bush Admin. does something right; Sony.

Bush Administration to Sony: It’s your intellectual property — it’s not your computer.

Sony knew they were dead in the water when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) admonished them on the CD rootkit scandal – at a Chamber of Commerce event on combating intellectual-property theft. According to Briand Krebs of the Washington Post the Department of Homeland Security’s assistant … Read More »
