@mattbrett I feel you on COD5. I thought the creators had nothing better to do but than add 100 enemies per battle + 200 grenades. Crazy!! in reply to mattbrett 10 hrs ago

I should note that a :) was in order because even though it was a unresolved conversation I didn't mind having it.

But yeah, more music less iphone.

Better yet, you can listen to music on your iPhone and Jared can use his cheapy mp3 player.

I wouldn't say that; I thought it was a productive conversation in which we both agreed that Apple forces you to buy their hardware and their operating system together, and we acknowledged that you were OK with that, and I didn't like it much, because I'd rather see their products actually compete on a more open market to see whether they are as good as some people think.

I don't know whether you ever really understood where I was coming from, but that's OK for now. I was actually surprised to hear you speculate that you don't think they'd be able to survive if they were to do that; I think (now as opposed to last time) they'd have much better luck (so I'm probably putting more faith in them than you in that case), but we'll probably never know.

Anyway, I thought we satisfactorily covered at least one aspect of the subject that we disagree on, enough so that we don't need to rehash it here or anywhere else.

Well...we may need to rehash some things.

Of course I think that Apple could not survive in the software market because of how MS has embedded themselves into the OS market, realistically it's going to be near impossible to compete with them no matter how much better their OS is. Even Linux (a superior OS) is having the hard time and they're free solutions. I also don't think it's a good business decision for them because they would then need to support so many variations of hardware. Which I didn't bring up early this morning, but one of the main reasons I like OS X so much (and many others agree) is because I don't have to worry about anything breaking in the OS because of drivers not being supported with the result of the system crashing.

I also want to point out that we do disagree that Apple is a hardware company. We also disagree that their business decisions should be compared to the Blackberry or any-other hardware company that doesn't license their software. Which is the reason why I don't understand, but that's OK because I know you wont be persuaded otherwise (which is OK for now :) ).

Before I forget, when we drive up to SF remind me to tell you that the iPhone should be compared to the sidekick for being closed and very successful for it's design and not software.

I hope I just didn't start another thread.

Like I said, it still seems like you weren't understanding what I was saying, and after that long of a conversation I don't know if that's going to happen on this issue. I won't start another thread about other related subjects (even though there are plenty), nor will I carry this one on any further, because I think we've both pretty much said everything we need to say.

To quickly clarify one major point of misunderstanding - I did agree multiple times that Apple is currently primarily a hardware company who also makes and sells software.

My point as far as the "hardware company" angle goes (as simple as I can make it) was that you (and other fans) often make comparisons of Apple's OS to others, portraying it in a superior light. But then when I make comparisons between the same operatings systems, you object by saying that "Apple is a hardware company, so you can't compare it to other companies that primarily make software".

My point is you can't have it both ways; either you can compare them as software products or you can't; don't say it's OK to compare them sometimes, but not others.

And that's where we disagree because I think I can have my cake and eat it too.
