Even though today was a half day, a Friday and I was able to play golf I still can’t shake how today was one of the worst days ever at work. A couple people made it clear to me that they do not respect my job as a system administrator when they told me to give some clueless employee *root* access to the webserver because he was “inconvenienced” when file permissions were limiting him to overwrite some html files. Tempers flared and a shouting match ensued; as they should, since my main goal as a sys admin is to protect, secure and not buckle to ignorant demands from people whom think they know everything but in all actuality don’t know how permissions work. I was actually told, “I have a website through a hosting company and I’m able to write or overwrite anything I want without a problem”. Simply laughable and only one juicy tidbit of the clash. I’m in a tough place now, it should be resolved with some chmod commands I ran, I’m also going to take Nathan’s suggestion and change the user profiles on the server to write files at 0775 but it’s clear that this wont be the last time my job is questioned by a certain few.
