Steve Jobs knows best

When asked about the iPhone not being an open platform, Jobs responded,

“You don’t want your phone to be an open platform,” meaning that anyone can write applications for it and potentially gum up the provider’s network, says Jobs. “You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.”

You can’t possibly drink enough kool aid to believe that. The Blackjack, the Pearl and even cingulars branded smart phone running windows mobile can run custom, user installed code. The worst part about this, people will believe him, not the apple crazys but the “general pubic” I talk about so often. And statements like this only create more disgust for Jared ill feelings towards OS X and Apple.

  • I don't think he's referring to network congestion, since Cingular all kids of phones on their networks, many of which can run custom apps (like Dan said).

No, this is just Steve spreading more FUD. Either he actually believes what he's saying is true and therefore has a horrible handle on technology (at least for someone in his position), or he knows he's outright lying to people and hoping they believe him.
  • What a strange comment to make, I would also expect (well at least to me) that the availability of allot of third party apps like on S60, UIQ and Java platforms would be a big attraction to users

I'm also not really sure what he means by taking down operator networks, there is the possibility of screwing up users phones if it's a badly written unsigned application but taking down networks is a big call.. Maybe he is referring to network congestion ?
