Spam

After asking Nathan what he uses for spam blocking he surprised me with the answer of “nothing”. It turns out he uses the built in WP2 function “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”. I turned this on Sunday so those few spams that pass Akismet would just stop in moderation and the few commenters that don’t have already approved comments would have to wait a couple hours before I approve them. Well it turns out that the built in feature doesn’t work too well because every time Nathan comments I have to approve it and I think Martha’s comments are doing the same.

I’m just stuck, I don’t like having to delete the few comments that stray by Akismet and it’s also annoying to approve comments from people that have been here plenty of times before. And before Jared says SK2, I can’t use it with my K2 base, something to do with the AJAX commenting. I wonder if there is another solution or somehow reset what WP2 looks up for approved authors so it fixes itself.

  • It's definitely a problem nowadays... ever since I read a glowing article on Akismet a few weeks ago, my SPAM has shot thru the roof and I don't go to any nefarious sites and rarely register either. I did load SK2 when it came out and will have to wait and see how it works out.

But I like the sporadic comments from new visitors and registering is such a big deterrent to me. I've stopped myself from commenting on so many blogs because of registration being required that I never want to do that.
Also, I'm one of those non-registrars, I do register but I use so many computers it doesn't help.
  • You could always just only allow comments from registered users. It isn't that hard for people to register, and once they do, they don't have to even log in again if they tell it to remember them.

as you remember, i had that problem with your comments initially, but it seems to have worked itself out. maybe the system just takes time to learn some people?
