SoftCE is coming along with a new re-design (demo/demo) and I’m really stoked on how it looks. The new JavaScript and overall design in a lot better then the current release.

I do have some problems. Cost is one, I still have no idea if I’m underselling it at under $15 a month. fifteen a month just seems like a lot now -a-days but with how much other software is it’s comparable. The only reason I would want to charge more is if I wanted to do it full time.

Doing SoftCE full time would be a dream. I talked to a head IMQ guy and he thinks it looks great and I could possible sell it nation wide. And this guy does know what he is talking about since his job is to survey hospitals that deal with CE.

But at $15 a month I would need a lot of people to sign up. And with more people come more work/costs, especially with support and server maintenance.

Oh server maintenance, I planned to just use shared servers which would be more then adequate but they do add up depending on how many clients I get. I wonder if I could fit 25 clients on on plan. I would think so no problem. Anyways time will only tell.

Wish me luck. I do have some good meetings coming up I plan to be at to push this along and I’m going to make some pamphlets this weekend. How exciting.

  • When you say $15 / per month are you talking about per user or per client (I'm assuming you're selling this to organizations).

If it's per user, then it would seem a bit high, but it would probably be best to sell per organization anyway (which you probably are), in which case $15/month is too low (IMHO).

Any organization large enough to need a product like this should have no problem paying $50 per month for the service, $30 at a minimum. This sounds kind of funky, but if you go too low, they might not respect you as a serious service provider.

  • I'm not sure why, but I tried to submit a comment on this like 3 times and kept getting moderated. I just went and logged in, so hopefully this one will get through....

If it's $15 per user, it's probably too much, but I'm guessing you're talking per company / organization. If that's the case, then I think it's too low. Most organizations that could make use of this product would pay several times that per month if it met their needs. I would recommend a tiered pricing structure based on the size of the organization (number of users, etc.) but probably never lower than $30-40 per month even for small ones. If you go too low, they might not respect you as a serious service provider.

No I totally agree with you on that one. That's another reason I don't want to charge to little.

    Perfect idea.

I wonder why, did it happen on the other posts?

My thoughts good or bad, worth it or not, but here they are straight up -

Too low a price might make it look a toy. It is clearly not that, it is a serious work of art made with vision and expertise.

I would think a flat fee for a 2 yr license per company might solve some problems.
One number that people don't have to get approval for is $ 99.00.
Throw in a 30 or 60 day money back guarantee.
$ 15 is probably a good price if you have a potential million users.

You are not doing this as a gift to the cme world and need to recoup your expenses and your time at least.

    Questions:
How large is your market? Divide 50% of that number and price it so you have covered expenses and make a decent profit to continue the company. Companies that I have know about their margins have run from a 20% markup to a 700% markup and been competively priced all the while.

    What are the comp prices?
How much time is saved by using this?
What is the price of the software you are replacing?

What can you live with in regards to the amount of effort you need to put in with servicing accounts/web site?
