That video is classic, mindless, stereotypical Wii bashing from people who are way too into being (or considering themselves) “expert” gamers.
It’s exactly the same criticism people like that have about pretty much every Wii game, and I can only assume they get so worked up about it because so many more people (general population types) actually LIKE PLAYING Wii games.
It frustrates them because they know their ultra-elite games are oh so technically superior, but they fail to realize that most people (aside from hard core gamers) don’t care about that, and just want to sit down every now and then and play games that are fun and which don’t require the investment of a significant portion of one’s waking hours to really get into.
Any –fighting– game that allows anyone to win; just by button mashing is not fun unless you only play it 5 times a year with friends. You might as well roll dice or play candyland because whatever skill you have could easily be worthless in a game of brawl.
So, the general public would like that because they don’t have to play it a lot to win at least once.
But this is a review for people that buy games, you know the people that like video games enough to pay $50-60 not experts.
Even if the button mashing point were true (which it isn’t), it sounds like you agree with my point - that (generally speaking) more people like games that do not require a high level of commitment.
The button mashing thing is a bit annoying just because it isn’t true in this case, but that’s a nitpicking point that is too insignificant to argue about in the same conversation as whether it’s a good game or not from the perspective of a large audience.
I guess that’s the point - the perspective of the audience is what matters in this kind of review. I’m just saying that it’s kind of stupid for a guy like this to make the review so purposefully insulting without acknowledging his awareness (if he has it) of the fact that his perspective is one that most people don’t share or care about.
Candyland!
I beat you and Christian by button mashing the first 3 games the other day, so it is true.
That was a different situation, for a lot of reasons. For one thing, I haven’t played it much more than you have, and the other factor was that it was a three person battle where Christian and I were going after each other almost the whole time since we didn’t want to gang up on you and stomp you. One on one would definitely be a different story.
The whole button mashing thing is just so funny to me. Reminds me of the old days hanging out in the arcade with endless streams of challengers on SF2. You had good players, players who thought they were good, and button mashers. When the players who thought they were good got beaten by the button mashers, they’d always whine about it and curse the game, etc., but the truly good players (who would not be beaten by button mashing) would laugh at them because they knew they were just sore losers and did not understand the nuances of good play.
