I moved servers for this site, again. This morning I just thought, “might as well I have 30 minutes”.
So I rsynced my files over to the (mt) server, setup the config file to look connect to the old server’s db, changed IPs in godaddy, then after church I came home and dumped the db and imported it on my new server, changed the config file to look locally and viola!.
It’s pretty basic and I’ve got it down to a science since I’ve moved this site over 10 times in the last 4 years.
Why did I leave the grid server? There were just too many times the site went down for 2-3 minutes and sometimes was just very slow to respond. Most importantly, the benefits I get from the grid from having my client websites there I was not getting on my blog site. Those benefits being: the ability for the client to manage their site easier.
So, not a big deal but I thought I should post about it since I really needed to blog about something. And if you see any performance boosts, it’s because of the (dv) server change.
aside:
Media Temple’s (dv) plans are great, a little pricey but they’re worth it. Bandwidth and performance are exceptional. They also let you pretty much do anything you want, unlike other VPS hosts.

Could you elaborate on what they let you do that others you've tried don't? Just curious.
Well, at spry they wouldn't allow you to run squid amongst other services, I can't find the link anymore but I'm sure you can find the page of limitations (I remember a pretty big list).
MediaTemple's policy is simply: "Although (mt) Media Temple cannot assist in the installation of 3rd-party applications you are free to install and use whatever software you want without restrictions."
aside: I noticed Spry's rates are crazy high now (compared to what they were). They end up being the same as (mt) and (mt) has always been regarded as high. You probably don't have to worry but if they try to raise your rates I can get you a deal at (mt) or you might want to checkout that mosso hosting from Rackspace.
As I've already said, I'm extatic with Media Temple's uptime, speed, performance and support with their (dv) plans. Ha Ha, I just thought about the reason I left Spry–that one day (or two) that all of the servers were down and no one answered anyones calls or emails because of some snow storm in Washington.

Hmm, interesting. I think if/when I need to move again, it would probably be up to a dedicated or colo, rather than to another VPS.
I've been generally pretty happy with Spry, and the rate has stayed the same as it was since I signed up, which is pretty good. Never had any restrictions on anything imposed on me, including running proxy services, etc. I suspect they're probably more concerned if you're running an open proxy or something of that nature, which would be dumb of them to allow.
I don't recall a full one-or-two day system outage; the only long downtime I've had was a misconfiguration in their network equipment (routing tables, etc.) that caused a couple of the IPs on my server to be unreachable even though the server itself was fine. It was pretty frustrating that this particular problem actually happened more than once – I ended up finding out that someone backed up the wrong settings and then they got restored a couple times after that before everything got sorted out.
