Scatt3rd Blog

By popular demand the classic blog is back.

Even without the sidebar and with the limited posts I like it. It’s simple. It really has everything a blog should have. Posts and search. What else do you really need?

The only problem, I don’t know how to make it more noticeable. I don’t want it to be my main “blog” or home page but I would like to have it known for the on-off readers that I personally know. And I know, even with the easy url dancameron.org/blog/ , people will forget. So what do I do?

A splash page is out of the question. I don’t know if theme switching would be effective, even though it uses cookies to remember what you like. Maybe a simple graphic will do in the header or a rounded image floating right below the header and before the post. I wonder what it could say.

better as in content specific generated ads.

Google ads are better, but it seems Yahoo pays more.
  • I actually am thinking of signing up with Yahoo ads, before I release my next batch of plugins and other OS projects; I think I'll donate the profits to the EFF.
  • Dan
    of course.
  • Why, you know I was only joking with you right?
  • Dan
    It wouldn't have helped.
  • Oops, I forgot the smiley face.

I think the new layout has only helped more for friends. Because now I post more about non-tech stuff. I just have to make sure they look at the asides to do so.

Maybe I should create a tag for non-tech stuff and then Sara and others could just read that section of my blog.

    hhuuummm?????

Nathan: That made me laugh and smile.

    Jared: that didn't.
  • Ya, Dan definitely has a good strategy going. It kind of makes me want to start using Yahoo ads too, and then submit all my tech posts to digg.

    hahaha, did = didn't

did mean the last part as an insult, i'm just saying most of your visitors are here because you have great tech content. the asides are not interesting to them, but to me, those are the most interesting part because i care about my friend dan, not about my friend dan's latest tech adventure.

i've adapted to your two two two blogs in one thing, and i never said i didn't like your design. my main problem was you just threw out a completely new concept (uh-sides) and didn't explain them at all. plus the fact that all the content i care about is below kinda sucks, but i can't complain. you designed your site to appeal to 99% of your traffic: people who don't know you or care about your life.

But even with theme switching you have to know it's there.

And I really doubt I would ever do 2 different themes since you wouldn't see the homepage, the way I like it, with all the info I want seen.

The best of both worlds would be perfect. A cookie that would route you to .../blog/ if you select that layout. No theme switching involved just a reroute.

Would you know anything about implementing that?

And even though it's different I have received some good compliments, from people I know. And the only people that care, that I've heard, is the people who don't use RSS (aagghh-hhuumm strykers). And I might just take the new page down just because I rather force them into using it.
  • This seems like the kind of thing that theme switching was built for, so I'd suggest that, since it's a logical fit.
