PS3 launch details

Sony just announced PS3 launch details as follows from the conference floor: “Today we’re pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive. Japan’s date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In North America [to launch Nov 17]: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006. By March 31, 2007 they’ll have shipped 6 million worldwide.”

Looks like the 360 was a deal at $399 for the high end system and $299 for the low end. Don’t get me wrong though the price is still pretty good since it has a blueray player, HDD and (last time I heard) DVR functionality.
I don’t know about the 360 launch but it seems like stores will be in store for another shortage and with the retailers being able to set the high end system’s price I would imagine seeing the retailers charging an arm-and-a-leg for the thing because you know how rich kids parents are around Christmas.

On other news the controller specs were released and it looks like they stole the Wii’s “secret weapon” with it’s X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw and lateral motion detection. Although the Wii has a lot more involved I like Sony even less, which has been dwindeling since the root kit fiasco and other craziness of recent.

  • One difference I think that could affect things would be the availability of the games. The lack of good game availability (IIRC) was a problem for the original X-Box, whereas with the PS2 you could at least play all the PS1 games plus new ones that would come out.

I'm guessing that this will be a bit different this time, in that both systems will be able to do that (I'm assuming - not knowing anything about either of them). Although from what I've heard there's still a shortage of good games on the 360, too, but I saw some good demos at Dan's house on Wednesday, so maybe they can pull enough out before the PS3 release to take care of that.
  • Hee hee. OK, apparently the symbol left of the question mark is a bad thing to press, so I won't press it anymore. Sorry for the learning process here that is cluttering up your comments.

My attempted message, minus evil characters:

"The Washington Post has an article in which VP Peter Moore says that since the PS3 is so expensive, gamers might as well get an Xbox 360 and a Wii for the cost of one Sony console." From the article: "Microsoft predicted on Tuesday it will have 10 million Xbox 360 consoles in the market before Sony launches the PS3."

Sony's PS2 looked like the underdog - more difficult to program for, by developers; released later; hard to get; not as powerful as the Xbox; no online support like the Xbox - yet we all know how that one ended: a resounding KO by Sony.

PS3 has the odds against it as well, but I don't know if I can envision a scenario where this will play out any differently than it did last generation.
  • I think using three "
  • >>> I read that MS is claiming they will have the 360 in millions of homes way before the PS3 sells one.

Jason, congrats to you and Brook on the baby!

MS could win outright if the HD-DVD drive is cheap (about $100) which is doubtful, because the only thing the PS3 has going for them in my mind is the Blueray drive. I'd have to say console prices are going to rule this year and with the 360 going to be identical to the PS3 for at least a year it doesn't seem like people would follow the brand. I'd expect the Wii to do very well because of this.
  • I'll be retracting my earlier comment shortly. The Joystik/Engadget Podcast is ripping on the PS3 on some very valid points. hmmmmm. I'll watch G4 and see what more I can learn.

Wii is the Nintendo Revolution now. New post coming soon.
  • nstryker
    what's the wii?
  • I love the community reaction to the PS3 news:

The comments seem to be ripping into the PS3, though we'll have to wait to find out if they are the vocal minority. Nintendo seems to be doing everything right - but the last couple of generations tells us that probably won't get them what they need to beat the PS3.

My favorite comment from the link above:

"LOL! You didn't know about that? That the $499 will lack HDMI, meaning that you can't watch Blu-ray movies on it."
  • Dang. This comes out 10 days before my baby is due. I wish I could pre-order today. I am getting one for sure. No 360 for me. Glad I waited.
  • Jenn
DAMN, I was hoping that it wouldnt be that bad. Looks like I am just going to have to wait and upgrade in a few years.

Are you willing to shell out $499 for Sony's new PlayStation 3?

Go ahead and vote, it's currently at.

    15% Totally!

20% Maybe, I want to look at one up close first.

    61% No way.

4.5% Depends. Is it my money, or my dad's?

Polls are polls but it doesn't look good.
  • I'm going to have to start saving up now... they're really gonna milk us for every penny on this one. I'll bet the games are gonna run $70 a piece too.
  • Dan
Link to a PDF document hosted on Sony's site. The third page lists the differences between the two versions. The cheaper version does NOT have Memory Stick, HDMI, or wireless.

Wow, looks like the PS3 is going to suck for the first year when it's way overpriced. compared to the Wii which is rumored at $249 launch and the 360 rumored to drop it's price this Christmas to $349 and a confirmed HD-DVD add-on.
