Modify Firefox 1.5 to work with all extensions

For all of those who just downloaded Firefox 1.5 and can’t get your extensions to work. This is a simple modification of Firefox’s configuration to trick the extensions to work. No need to manually edit the extensions to get them to work. Currently all the extensions I use work except the bookmark sync extension that I so dearly want to.

  1. At the location bar, enter: about:config. This will show you a list of Firefox internal preferences.
  2. Right-click on the list, select New > String
Enter “app.extensions.version (without quotes) for the preference name.
  3. Then, enter “1.0 (without quotes) as the value for app.extensions.version.
  4. Restart Firefox 1.5, then enable those disabled Firefox extensions.
  5. Restart Firefox 1.5 again to active the extensions. Done.

Personally I think this is the best solution because you can always go back and delete the string later rather then fiddling with the extensions.

[UPDATE]

if you change 1.0 back to 1.5 Spoofstick [and potentially others] will continue to work and can also look for updates.

Thanks wgc

If you are thinking of making one of the web design and donít know what type of extension host providers give support to then donít worry; the web site hosting, works with almost all types of extensions. One can upload and delete any thing from their site. The host providers not only provide site builder website tools but also provide complete marketing facilities as well. • Hey DAN

    1. Are those modification valid for the NEW ThunderBird v1.5?

    Thanks, Ami
    2. Do you know the date which TB 1.5 appeared?
  • jakken
    what is the location bar?
  • I applied the tip, but my Firefox now only run in safe mode. What can I do?
  • On a side note; you need to change version number back to "1.5" if you want to use the Gmail Space extension too.

This is a VERY bad method and will break all extensions that require 1.5 to work. Do it if you must, but using nightly tester tools to override and make your old extensions work is a much better method.

    Hello:

Read your post and followd your guideline. All my extensions are now working as they did with my previous version of Firefox 1.07. Thanks a lot. I had read about it but was reluctat to do it, fearing that it could hamper my Firefox 1.5 version.

However everything worked according to the book. Thanks a lot for this tip. I'm spreading the word at my block; Epiac's Place. Take a look.

    Cheers,

    Omar.-

I originally was dissapointed when changing the “app.extensions.version to 1.0, because I couldn't run 1.5 extensions. Well, I changed the value to 1.5, and all my 1.0 and 1.5 extensions work.
Thanks WGC, you made my life that much more pleasant.

    Check http://maxt.dk/archives/2005/11/29/firefox-exte...

Probably want to update your post with this nifty info ;)

    Greetings!
  • The "nightly tester tools" extension does this nicely and gives you a checkbox on the install dialog box (the one with the 3 sec pause) so you can overide the version and make compatable...

  • cool tip! some of my extensions did not work when I upgraded. this should help!
  • Great trick! Most of the extension just set maxVersion to be 1.0.x and therefore not compatible with 1.5
