Linux Action Show hates freedom me

Yesterday I e-mailed TLAS about the conversation happening over on one of my posts. Without entirely reading the entire post they noticed a “mac fan” was criticizing them for their stance on Apple and how it clearly biased their Apple news reporting. Chris responded with,

Mac fanboys are all trolls, and well, I try not to feed the trolls.

He is obviously feeling insecure about his “Mac faith” so he needs to
attack us to rally the troops so that they can reassure him that his Mac
life style is worth basing his entire self worth around it. The sad part
is I feel sympathy for that poor man, he does not even realize thats
what he is doing. So I say let them spin their own wheels, they aren’t
getting anywhere and it’s fools like him that killed resexcellence.com.
He is the very type of person that nailed that coffin shut.

Thanks anyways man! You rock,

You’ll notice he didn’t understand I was the “fool”ish “troll” that he had “sympathy” for. I had originally wrote it off because it seemed to me he was just lumping me with any mac fanatic and I wasn’t about to defend them. But it turns out that he just lumps any person in the mac community into this description.

I come to this conclusion after digging around at resexcellance and seeing Phill Ryu’s post about Bryan Lund.

I’m going to grab some of my comments form the original post here. The tweet was about how the show has a direct anti-apple stance. And with reading Phill’s post, remembering the marketing ploy and the comments about the issue it’s clear to me that TLAS motivations to keep Apple down is entirely personal.

A little background on that Bryan’s Mac development we are referring to; Phill’s take. And what’s crazy is I remember this specifically…I never correlated LAS Bryan with the crazythis Bryan.

Honestly, with a little history the LA show has lost all credibility for me, maybe not the portions explicitly about Linux but I’ll still be cautious. Thanks to Phill for bringing some perspective because now I share a similar opinion about Brian and Chris and it’s going to be hard to rationally listen to their show now. This might sound a little fanboyish and immature but imagine if it was reverse and replace mac with linux and linux with windows. Shitting on a community that I feel I’m a part of isn’t good. And you can tell they’re still hot after that email.

Now that I’m seeing the whole picture of their experiences with the Mac community and “development” I’d have to say the response in our personal e-mails is rude, it was entirely his honest opinion since he thought I was someone else. Which they could have clearly realized by looking at my name in the email and the name on the comments. I gave him the benefit of the doubt (as you can tell by my response) but as I said after a little perspective I’m taking it completely different.

In response to Jared’s comments.

Phill is a very respected mac developer, one of the best. You must have missed the part about Bryan’s so called mac development, Phill knows more about the situation than anyone becuase he’s not some random guy he clearly involved with the site prior and now and he knows more about Bryan’s development than most as a mac dev and someone he personally knew. I do agree the post was very personal.

But I don’t really care for the personal side bashing, I can recognize that. And the slant didn’t affect my 180 about the show, the issue is that I now know Bryan was a “hack” developer (I can see that by his work, it’s still up) and his “experiences with the mac community”, which was entirely derived from him “ruining” resexcellance and the direct comments he received.

Like I said I don’t care about the personal stuff but it seems to me Bryan’s entire motivation to switching to Linux was personal. He wrote off the Mac community and Apple for all I’m concerned because of personal incidents related to feedback to a site. And the switch was a huge media/marketing ploy, I remember the diggs and related stories about it. So when they say they were ran a huge mac site and Bryan was a mac dev it doesn’t hold water for me.

He wasn’t a very good developer which directly effects his comments about how Apple hates it’s developers.

They both ran resexcellance into the ground and they couldn’t take constructive criticism so they wrote off every person in the mac community including myself because of those comments. And the comment in the e-mail solidifies that for me.

Chris’s reply was rude, as the receiving party I can say that. And it’s rude to me now and not earlier because it’s clear to me he’s basing his opinion on one tragic instance (resexcellance) instead of multiple interactions or at least reading the actual comments and deciding for himself how to approach.

Like I said, I’ll be cautious with the portions of the show were they don’t refer to Apple and when they do their opinion is entirely influenced by this stupid resexcellance situation and Bryan’s lack of development skills on the mac.

Like I said over on the other thread, I don't think you're in a position to judge either the development skills or the Apple community experience of someone you don't know, especially not primarily basing it on postings by people who clearly have an agenda to slam that particular person.

Also, please don't forget that the resexcellence story has two sides, and you are only reading the opinion of someone involved with one of those sides, and apparently deciding to believe everything that person says and nothing the people on the other side say.

It really seems that you're jumping on the bandwagon of personally judging someone that you don't really know, and I'm not sure why you have such strong feelings about him.

As to the larger issue of the show's Apple coverage, just remember that they are a Linux show, and that (as such) any Apple coverage will probably only be covered in relation to a Linux topic. Since Linux and the Mac OS are about as opposite as you can get in many ways, it stands to reason that some particular item from Apple is perceived as negative when it's being compared to its counterpart in the Linux world, which they view in a positive light.

As for the e-mails being rude, if you're going to quote that part, you should also quote the follow ups:

    From Dan:
No, you guys rock but I think you missed the part where I am the "fool"ish "troll" that you have sympathy for.

I do think you've wrongly labeled me, if not so-be-it. I'm secure enough to respect your opinion and I'm also aware that you don't know my history so lumping me in with the rest is something we all do since it's easier, I know I have.

Oh well, know I HAVE to send you an audio comment. Maybe instead of ogg I'll send it in ACC. :)

    later guys.

    Then back again from Chris:
heh, you send it to us as AAC and we will play it, I'll even be nice
    (well.. Maybe) :-)

BTW, when I was thanking you and said you rock, I meant for actually
contacting us first. Not everyone would do that. It was just a cool
thing to do and I appreciate it.
    -Chris

    Doesn't seem rude to me.

Should I explain myself by saying the same things over again? No.

No, I'm just pointing out that your conclusions about Bryan may be wrong.

You've decided that his experience with the Mac community "was entirely derived from" the resexcellence fiasco, which I'm absolutely sure is incorrect. You've determined he's a "hack" developer, without the necessary development experience or exposure to his code (much of which is not in publicly released products) necessary to make that determination.

I'm just trying to say that leaping to those conclusions based on incomplete (at best) or inaccurate information isn't really fair.

Go listlen to This Week in Tech to balance it out. They're (nearly) all pro Apple over there. ;P

    They totally are.

Episode 55 almost seems purposely inaccurate and slanted towards Linux. Once again, "it's just looks good" but "linux docks look better". Oh well, it's all entertainment.

    • v
Maybe you're just slanted against the LAS... :)

Seriously, couldn't it just be that they do think the Linux docks they use look better? That's doesn't necessarily mean they're biased.

I don't disagree that in some ways Linux looks better, it's just biased when you dismiss another's feature as uncritical or useless because Linux doesn't have it and then point out practically the same exact uncritical or useless feature of Linux as a pro against the others.

I <del datetime="2007-07-24T19:04:45+00:00">love</del> the take on photobooth and timemachine and then dismissing the mass updates for ical, mail and others as nothing special, then flip-floping on the gutsy release to say that Leopard isn't as big of an update.

I guess I shouldn't comment on the specifics of those shows, since I still haven't listened to 54 yet, much less 55.

I'm not necessarily saying they don't dish out a bit of mac bashing every now and then (which I don't have a problem with, of course). Whether you take that as being "slanted" or just a couple guys poking fun at Apple is a matter of personal preference.

I think they try to do an entertaining show, and throw in some Linux news along the way. If that means that sometimes they don't try to nail down / balance the technical details of each story (especially when it comes to taking jabs at Linux competitors), it doesn't really bother me, because I don't think they're trying to do that kind of "authoritative" news show.
