Kong Review

Kong

I really can’t write as much as I would like because I don’t want to shame this great movie with my conjecture. But let’s start of with Wonderful. Finally a movie worth paying the $10 for to ditch the wife and kid on a Friday night for, wow.

3 hours; it didn’t feel like 3 hours except at some early points in the film when I just anticipated some Kong crushing power. But I regress to say that my favorite movies tell stories through characters and the beginning had all of that for me. And I thank PJ for taking that time because I’m sure the studio wanted it to be cut and trimmed but he didn’t, he brought almost a (for the lack of a better term) friendship, between you and the character.

IT is vital to know the characters in and out before the tense situations that occur later. Because without that understanding you would not come close to feel what Ann felt emotionally when she stared at Carl Denham’s face right before the first capture attempt; a POWERFUL cinematic moment.

The casting was spectacular, Jack Black, better known for his humor, I thought would have played more of a quirky humorous role. He shed none of that. I’m not a real critic but I am a movie lover and I have to say he really broke through in this role. I say this Because I’m not a gullible movie goer and he had me convinced. Watts was great as well, in the scene I referenced above, an okay actor couldn’t have pulled that off, she was great. Brody as Driscal, wonderful as well, so good that I could even forget that he had a huge schnoz, :>D. Let me just say that I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them received an award next year, especially Jack. But I wouldn’t be surprised if not one got nominated because it seems the committees look past these popcorn movies.

Peter Jackson, Thank you. Not only do you really know how to take a story and really push the limits cinematically you have outdone yourself in my opinion. I talked a lot about the characters but I could only imagine that PJ had a lot to do with that character development. Knowing each individual character as if he was that person himself. Directing is not just pointing the camera and editing, it’s knowing every aspect and constructing it into a piece of art and he did that, from in, outward. And with all that, he really knows how to tell a story with spectacular CG. CG that would normally hinder a director into just playing with pretty lights and effects, similar to SWe1-2.5.

It’s late and I really can’t find anything wrong with this movie right now. It was more then I could have imagined. Only seeing the last release, the one that came out when I was a kid, I was still unknowing. I knew they went to an island and they took Kong back to NY and you know the rest but I had no idea of the details. And throughout that movie I wondered about everything like a kid watching it for the first time.

3 hours is worth it. $10 is worth it. And I will definitely see it again. Can’t think of a better movie right now, definitely Top 3.

Disclaimer: If you think your kids might be scared of a big gorilla, don’t see it because there are a lot more scary parts then that. Like the villagers, insects, and the…let me just say death, there is a lot of death involved.
