Wow, jail breaking the iPhone and iPod touch is way easier then ever before.
Hackers hdm/metasploit, kroo, dinopio, rezn, drudge, pumpkin, davidc, dunham, and NerveGas just setup and “instant” jailbreak for the iPhone and iPod Touch simply by going to a website.
Installer.app allows for third party application you like like an awesome NES emulator, ssh and much more.
Instructions on how to hack the 1.1.1 iPhone:
- Go to jailbreakme.com (don’t go to this site if you’re not using an iPhone of iPod touch).
- Read the directions
- Scroll down and select “Install AppSnapp”
- Safari disappears and you’ll simply return to the Home screen, this is a good thing.
- Just wait. It sometimes takes up to 5 minutes as it’s network dependant (I’m assuming it’s downloading and installing installer.app at this time).
- WAIT!! don’t do anything and be patient.
- Finally, you’ll be asked to “Slide-to-unlock”.
* If Safari hangs, just hold the home button for until you’re home again and try again.
You’re home screen will now have installer.app and you’re set to have all of those third party apps the “community” way.
I’m not sure how long this expoit will last, since it’s based off the TIFF exploit found shortly after the 1.1.1 release but it looks like installer.app won’t be needed for very long with the announment a few weeksback about an SDK release for the systems.
I went ahead and ran the installer on my phone before writing this post and it runs great. The new installer.app version 3 is great and finally manageable with it’s new UI. I’m still not sure how much I’ll use it though, since I’ve been perfectly fine with 1.1.1 since it’s release and not having any “third party apps” along with it.

bummer, didn’t work for me (did work for a co-worker though). Clicked the link, it tried to open another page (conceitedsoftware/jb/magic.tif) then safari just exited. Tried opening this link manually, same result. Tried it from a non iphone web browser (under windoze) and got a quicktime logo with a ? in it. (sigh). Too bad, it looked pretty cool.
Petah: I had a similar issue but I just restarted the phone and installer.app was installed. I then reinstalled it just to make sure. good luck.
When I try this, my iphone just hangs in Safari. After about 10 minutes or so I hold the home key down to get back and try again only to get the same problem. I have tried rebooting and trying again. It still will not work. Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?

I have the same problem, Safari just quits, I wait and nothing happens. Except, I got a call from “1″ and “Slide to answer” appeared, after answering the phone freezes…

here’s my advice: don’t install random shit from unknown sources on your $400 phone.
Especially not stuff that only works by exploiting a major security vulnerability.

Jared: If you’re worried about security it’s best if you install the app because if allowed it will fix the hole.

everyone else: If you follow the directions you shouldn’t have a problem. Make sure you’re running 1.1.1 and if you still have an issue then you’ll need to look somewhere else for support as I can’t help.
Ok mine works fine and has for over a week… but for no reason Ill be doing something in a program say NES or SAFARI and it kicks me out and put me to my desktop (or whatever you call it) and doesnt save anything. Any ideas?
Franky: Make sure you install the BSD Subsystem. Many of the 3rd party apps depend on it, and they’ll crash without it.
A friend of mine went to the Apple Store and jailbroke all the iPhone and iPod touch demo units, just for fun. I wonder how long before Apple Stores start blocking jailbreakme.com.

okay. I have an iPod touch and I would die if I frigged it up. If I do the jailbreakme.com thing, will it void my warranty? If it does screw up somehow how can I fix it? I don’t know tons about computers but I wantto keep my warranty alive. Any support to my questions would be wonderful from ppl who know what theyre talking about would be greatly appreciated. It can’t damage your iPod touch in the slightest. Anytime you want to undo the jailbreak and restore your iPod touch to its original condition just do a “restore” in iTunes.

Just do a sync before the restore (which will back up all your data). Once the restore is complete iTunes will put back your music, settings, etc. It’s completely seamless.
As to the warranty, I don’t know if it’s technically a violation or not, but I really don’t think you’ll have any problems.

I tried to do the whole jailbreakme thing but had my phone unlocked and “downgraded” to version 1.0.2 so when i tried to install the AppSnapp was told I have to restore to version 1.1.1 using iTunes…I’m pretty bad with the stuff…does anyone know how I restore back to version 1.1.1 and if that will mess up my phone?

So thanks guys. This was really easy and worked the first time I tried, but now it is starting to stop whatever im doing and go back to the home screen. It does it when im using any of my apps. Any one else having problems just as of Friday? This all started Friday and has gotten worse every day.

I downloaded the new iphone software and it tokk away the installer and my apps.I tried to download it again and it didn’t work. It loaded for a couple seconds and then stoppep. Anybody no how to download the installer again with the new iphone software

right away it goes to another page that says

and it just stays there for basically ever until the phone goes out.
its basically just a pointless page and then when i restart my phone there is no installer applcation there.

If it’s 1.1.2 than jailbreak will not load. I have been up and down google and I can’t find jailbreakme for 1.1.2 anywhere! If any one got it please post it.

I am also able to access jailbreakme.com and then I tap “install appsnap” and I see the url “jailbreakme.com/files/y.tiff” for a brief second, I then return to the Activate Screen, just stays there for about 2 minutes until the screen goes black. Nothing happens. Tried a reboot but no luck.

You will have to downgrade your software.I made the mistake of upgrading to 1.1.2. So i went back to 1.0.2. Everything works fine now. Download 1.0.2 then do a restore on itunes while holding the shift key down and choosing the right firm. Hope this helps

hey i was wondering if you guys could help me with a problem, i have an unlocked iphone running many 3rd party apps, unfortunately i installed an app that changed the colour of most of my icons (mail and safari now have an orange background) ive been trying to find this app and uninstall it but have been unsuccessful so i began uninstalling alot of my sources and apps and the icons remain the same colours that i hate, i was wondering if i restore my iphone using the itunes (shift+restore) method, would my phone still be unlocked when I’m done? Or even better is there a way to uninstall all apps at the same time so i can start over installing apps?

If you’re having the same issue I did, where after clicking install appsnapp, the iPod returns to the main screen and just sits there, try this:
Go to settings, and clear all settings.
now connect to your wifi source and try again; it worked for me first try after clearing settings.

I have downgraded to 111 and tried a hundred times to get it out of recovery mode but it doesn’t work. I also tried iphuc with only an error MSG about an iTunes dllit us looking for. I got the dll and still it can’t find the file. Any other ideas for downgrading from 112 to 111?

The reason a lot of people come here (to this post) is that it’s the second Google result (other than the site itself) for a Google search for “jailbreakme.com”
As to why they keep asking questions and hoping for answers, I’m not sure (since Dan already stated above that he wasn’t going to provide individual support).
My best guess (based on past experience and reading some of the comments) is that they didn’t read through the other comments (or probably even the whole article), tried it, and when they got the error they are just trying to post everywhere they can in hopes that someone will help.
In my first comment, I mentioned that I would hesitate to rely on a hack like this, especially if it could potentially brick your expensive device. If running other software on your phone is really important to you, then I suggest moving to a phone that allows you to do that rather than one that tries to prevent it and break or disables the hacks with future updates.
Well thanks for stating your opinion. That helped out a lot. I didn’t ask for a suggestion to which mobile device I should use. I asked if anyone had any other methods of making my expensive device worth a crap by enabling me downgrade to 111. This phone is just boring without all the apps that I once had.

KEEP TRYING. It will eventually do it. If it freezes, go back to home and start again. The installer eventually will extract the files and download the software and finaly restart your phone with the “unlock” slide.
TRUST ME, I tried around 100 times before it happenen. I have unlocked 4 phones and I know this can be an issue.

i had already installed “installer” but i was stupid and i’ve installed other apps without instaling first “summerboard” and now installer.app went to the bottom of the screen and i can’ t scroll down to it. Any advice ?

If appsnap won’t load, it’s because you have a newer version, you have to downgrade to version 1.1.1, they’re step by step videos on youtube, search “downgrading ipod touch to 1.1.1″, then try to do appsnap.

download the ipod 1.1.1 firmware from somewhere, once its finished downloading open itunes and shift click the version update button, this will allow u to select a file from your pc. go to where ever u saved the firmware and select that… now instead of ugrading your ipod to a newer version it will downgrade it.

hey. I have searched for hours to find a completly free, full version of some kind of software to get the songs off my iPod TOUCH and I have found nothing. I have not jailbreaked yet and I want to get the songs off clean. Would there be anyone with a site that that software would be on?? When i tried to install Appsnap, i had my itouch plugged into my computer with itunes running on the computer. Then i opened safari on my itouch and tried to download it but it comes up to a blank page and safari didn’t quit on its own….i was told to hold down the home button for awhile. I have an iphone with firmware 1.1.1 Originally i had the 1.0.2 with installer, but then upgraded to 1.1.4 then it started turning off by itself so i tried downgrading many times until it worked and i finally stayed with 1.1.1 But when i try to download the appsnap, safari just quits. i know that its supposed to do that but nothing happens after that. Without touching anything ive waited for a long time, and still nothing happens. Would all that upgrading and downgrading have anything to do with it not downloading?
