iPhone

picture-2.pngThe new iPhone was just announced. Going to be released in June through Cingular it’s a little pricey even for me. This time around the item I’ve been waiting for Apple to release is something I rather not buy. The functionally is phenomenal: touch screen, small, powerful, a bunch of great apps, innovative and also very expensive. We all figured that it would be that much when they started listing all of it’s “technologies” but still, $499 and $599 with a ball breaking contract through Cingular.

Only if they wrapped all of that up without the phone portions and increased the storage to iPod sizes would it be a necessary iPod upgrade purchase. I’m actually confident that this is what they’ll do, only after the crazys buy the iPhone and manufacturing prices comes down to get a price point of around $399.

Overall I’m really excited to see the iPhone just not in my possession. The Peral I own is fantastic and I couldn’t ask more from it right now except to make me use it less.

Note: I’m curious as to how they are going to get away with the name of iPhone since Linsys owns the name. Maybe another Apple records fiasco.

iPhone is available with Cingular ONLY!? And what if I am stuck under contract with a carrier OTHER than Cingular but still want a iPhone?
Well, the only solution I could fine was http://www.spamsite.com- they get you out of any cell phone contract!
  • Yeah, I guess you would need quite a bit more storage space if you're going to watch a lot of video. I've never been into portable video (at least in an iPod size device) so that wouldn't be a big deal for me.

The installing your own apps thing would be a huge deal for me, though. IMHO, "the best internet tablet" must allow you to install other apps on it, aside from just a web browser (ssh, VPN client, etc.)
  • Dan
When I talk about tablets I'm comparing it to the Nokia machine but even if you could put another browser on it it wouldn't be as good as the safari app they have running, at least for the time being.

I don't use a Nano, I use a Video iPod that is always full with Video. You are right 8 gigs of music is perfect for most but when you make the best video player where does Video go. It doesn't even stream video, yet.

I'll buy it when it's $500, 30gb and you can install whatever you want.

Note: I've read the typing is horrible to get used to without any tactile surface. They do say it'll learn but I type so much on my pearl that I'd be very hesitant to switch.

Don't you use a Nano now? 8GB would be enough for me, just because any more would affect the size of the device (right now at least). It would be nice if you could expand it via miniSD, though.

It does seem pretty good as far as tech goes, and actually it sounds like I'd like it more as an audio player than you would.

My only gripe with your description above is that it would be very difficult for me to call something "the best internet tablet" when you can't install your own (non-Apple approved) apps on it. Same goes for the other "best" labels to lesser degrees.
  • Dan
Jared: It's worth installing quicktime. The keyboard is on screen and it's using some kind of sure type that predicts what your next letter is in order to make sure you type correctly, that way it compensates for not having physical keys. I'd still recommend installing quicktime or a codec that will run it because the motion stuff is pretty sweet.

I'm also willing to bet that Jason is going to get it before me.

No techie/geek can say that this device isn't a leap ahead in that market. It's the best iPod or DAP (except storage), it's the best internet tablet, It's by far the best video player and it could be a great phone (except the size).

Like I said, the pearl is a better phone and I'm not going to spend $600 for a device that is an "all-in-one" that doesn't replace anything. If it where a true iPod with 30gb of storage I'd get rid of my ipod ($250) and my Pearl ($200) (those aren't ebay prices) and it still doesn't justify the cost. Maybe if it truly ran OS X and I could install apps that Apple doesn't approve of the extra cost would justify it, since then it would be more then just a phone and an ipod.
  • I'll get in on that bet. I would have loved to see him scanning his house when he got home from work today, looking for stuff to ebay and seeing if it adds up to $599 in his head.

Anyone want to place any bets on how long Dan can hold out?

One question (since I don't feel like installing QuickTime to watch the video): they mention a full QWERTY keyboard but I didn't see one; is it an on-screen keyboard or physical keys?
  • Dan
I'm watching the video of this thing and it's unbelievable. So fast and responsive. I can't wait until these things are 30-40gigs because it's truly an all-in-one machine.
