Good gracious. these darn computer thingys!

My point is that he’s not taking a salary so he can make more money not because he loves and cares about APPLE.

article I found when looking to see who the current highest paid CEO was said Steve Jobs was the highest paid CEO in 2003 even though he didn't take a salary. He's a businessman not an employee.

    "ssh shit in"

    That was so damn funny.
  • Dan
    LOL
  • re: jobs' non-salary. the reason this is cool isn't because he's poor or noble. it's because he cares about the company enough to want that money in rd or whatever, instead of in his own pockets. they offer him cash and he says, "no thanks, i'm good." that shows he cares about the company. i don't think anyone is under the false impression that steve jobs is not a capitalist.
  • ipods are just like macs: really expencive for what they do, but the smooth interface makes up for it. so if the you're running linux you probably don't give a crap about smooth interfaces and have no need for ipods or itunes. the hypathetical mmovie would contain all kinds of interface irregularities and be insecure and there would be no need to buy it over the iflick or whatever else is out there. the ipod isn't just an overpriced mp3 player, it's a wicked cool mp3 player and itunes is just part of the wicked cool package.

the reason "m$" gets shit for ie isn't because it's packaged with windows, it's because ie sucks. if ie was a really slick product most people wouldn't be screaming monopoly. i see nothing wrong with a tight itunes/ipod integration. you're playing the extra cash for a smooth product, why would you want a slick interface that you have to manually drag and drop shit into. or would you prefer to ssh files onto the ipod from the command line?

I wasn't saying he wasn't getting paid. He gets paid through Pixar. I just think it says a lot for someone to reinvest his earned money to a company he believes in. I will check that link out.

highest paid CEOand found some interesting pages. Check the fourth and sixth link down from 2003.

Maybe I shouldn't say you are wrong, you just might have been mislead.

    1. Of course they are going to say you need iTunes.

    2. The reason there are a lot of hacks out there is because when you sync your iPod to one computer with iTunes you can't take those files and put them on another or even sync it with another.

I will check tomorrow at work. You are making me think I am wrong on this but I distinctly remember doing this around Christmas. And maybe we are both right because you do have(?) to enable disk use with iTunes.

Anyways, just another blog post that starts here and ends there.

  • Until I hear otherwise (ie: a quote/link from Apple's site) that says you can just do a straight file copy over USB and play the mp3 on the iPod, I still doubt it, for a couple reasons:

    1. Everything on Apple's site (that I've seen) says that you need iTunes to load music onto the iPod to play.

    2. The fact that there are "unofficial" third party plugins and hacked drivers for copying files onto the iPod to play leads me to believe that the restriction was put there by Apple. Otherwise, why would these tools exist, if the problem they are working around does not exist?
  • Dan
I still think your wrong. Because I remember doing it months back and it working. we should ask Jon since that is how (90% sure) he uses his iPod.

Nate: CEO money is still a lot. Dell CEO received around 3.4 million in 2003. And I would imagine he would get paid a lot more since he single handedly turned apple around.
  • PS - I should qualify that; from what I read you can drag any files you want onto the disk, but that's only for storage. If you want to play music files, they have to go through iTunes or one of the hacked drivers available. It's just ridiculous that they would go out of their way to add this restriction to the device.
  • After doing more research, everything I have read says that you do need iTunes to transfer music to the iPods, unless you download special (hack) drivers or "unofficial" plugins for Winamp, etc. You can't just copy the files directly over USB without a special driver that is not made (or supported) by Apple.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a *gigantic* negative in my book, regardless of how good iTunes is. You would never let Microsoft slide on doing something like this. Imagine that they create the next big thing (an imaginary product: "mMovie" portable movie player); if they designed it to only be usable from Windows you would call them evil, and perhaps rightly so. If someone came back with "Well, why don't you just use Windows?" that would not fly.

What I'm saying is Apple is basically doing the same thing; iTunes is only made for Windows or Mac. What if you want to use Linux or some other alternative OS, or you just don't want to use iTunes for whatever reason? According to Apple you cannot do that; of course there are unsupported hacks that let you get around it, but no thanks to Apple.

I'm not bagging on iTunes, it definitely has the best organization features I have seen, but if it weren't for that I would use Winamp for everything since it is so much faster and takes up less memory than iTunes. Even now I will often just use Winamp because iTunes is rather slow compared to it.
  • Dan
no need for a "yeah but" because that info is WRONG. If you enable disk use to your iPod you can just drag the files onto the disk and then when you use your iPod they're ready to go. Jon H. uses his iPod this way. I don't even think you need to use iTunes to sync the iPod if you buy music through the iTunes store. And if you have a shuffle you might have to use iTunes but you should since iTunes recompresses the songs for you on they fly when you sync.
Like Stryker said, "iTunes rocks", it really is the best music application out, for either OS.
  • yeah, but itunes rocks. i use it and don't even have an ipod.
  • Oops, in case you couldn't tell; that last one was from me. I cleared the cookies on my browser and forgot to log back in on your blog.

Sorry for the delay in bashing... I mean commenting; I've been kind of busy.

In short, my criticism of Apple has nothing to do with how much money Steve Jobs makes, although I'm quite certain he makes *plenty* of money, regardless of what his "salary" technically is.

P.S. - Apple is still greedy. Speaking of that, I was talking with a friend today about the iPod and he said that you have to load the songs onto the device using iTunes if you want to play them. Is this true? If so, Apple sucks even harder than I previously thought.
  • Nate
No doubt Steve Jobs is in it to win, but the scoreboard is in dollars. He doesn't need a wimpy CEO salary. He makes the real dough when the companies he owns and operates are financial successfully. The guy is a multi-billionaire. He obviously knows how to make money and will do is darnedest to make sure he gets paid. Just not in the most obvious, high tax way. I'm not bashing him though; I don't want to work for free.
  • Dan
I guess this sort of shut Jared up on the whole mac bashing. Even if he comes back after this comment is posted with 'apple is still greedy, and they should make their OS opensource.'
