iDVD ‘08 won’t start

Turns out that the older iDVD themes aren’t compatible with the new iDVD and since I had every version of iDVD it was causing iDVD to just show a splash screen an then shutdown. In order to fix the issue you need to clear out the old themes and then trash an application support folder in your user directory.

Step 1) Delete all old themes. Themes are located in your system’s library folder-

/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes

Only theme folders iDVD 1, iDVD 2, and iDVD 4 need to be deleted.

Step 2) Delete the ‘Installed Themes’ directory here,

username/library/application support/idvd

Step 3) Start iDVD.

  • Thank you so much, this worked, I needed to delete just a few more things (as you mentioned).
  • Um, I got a new mac, and like you said, iDVD always quits! so I went to delete those folders and, I only HAVE themes 5 and sox. On the apple website it told me to download iDVD 7.0.1, and i did. Now it doesnt "quit" right away, but it doesnt do anything else either. no window comes up or anything, so I have to force quit. what is going on?
  • The idvd icon when pressed will bounce as if it is opening yet nothing happens. I tried reinstalling ilife 08 after I deleted the themes and still no progress. Right now i have no themes and an idvd that still does not work.

iDVD 08 won't show anything on the video screen. There's just a black screen there.

Thanks for all the suggestions- In the end, I had to COMPLETELY REMOVE the iMovie app and then reinstall it...simple. The key was in removing the app from the HD. Beware, other iLife components did stumble a bit after the fix. "REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS" seemed to fix it up.

I've tried reinstalling Ilife'06 to get my iDVD or iMovie to work...but, alas-When I try to use the fix you've described, there is no submenu below library/application support/iDVD...

    Any ideas? anyone? Thanks. Eric
