I’ve been really flip flopping with changing my domain recently, specifically because I want to sell ads based off my google rank. I have idancameron.com and I really like the domain, as I’ve already said but I don’t want to lose about $100 a month if I “whore out my google rank” for text links on dancameron.org. So my goal is to setup two.

One for all the ads, which would be dancameron.org.

The second would be idancameron.com which I’m just going to let real people know about specifically you. Because this site wont have ads or text links and I’m going to start hiding my personal posts on the .org site. I just have to figure out how since I rather not make you change your rss feeds too.

So if you want change your links to idancameron.com for your personal use and if you haven’t changed links on your site already don’t worry about it. And if you have don’t worry about that either, I rather not care about who sees what.

You probably are blocking it. It's a link to http://www.text-link-ads.com/?ref=30934
  • Good thinking - I forgot that you could just point separate installs to a different options table.

Why was that last comment blank?

Jared: I would get paid for text links so they go off page rank, nothing else. Since I'm at GPR 6 I could get over $100 a month, maybe more. That's pretty much what those guys wanted with my domain.

Technical, if I have a high page rank and I link to some without any page rank their domain PR goes up. And people pay a lot for it. I forget the link but I'll comment on the site later. Alex King is using it now too.

The sharing of the DB is already done, I did that last night. I just have the .org site linked to a different options table that I duped from the original. It was actually VERY easy to do. All you have to do is modify the wp-settings.php file and add a different prefix for the options.

PS - forgot about this before, but your big problem will be trying to run the two different domains from the same database (assuming that's what you're talking about doing). One thing I don't particularly like about the wordpress software is that it does internally use that domain name to form URLs for linking and redirecting, and it doesn't support two different ones out of the box.

I think in order to do that it would require heavy modification, way more than I would ever think was worth it. It would be a lot easier just to run the two domains on two different DBs and then write a script that syncs the posts and comments from one into the other.

Do you get ad revenue that's partially based on page views or only when people click those ads?

If you get money from page views, it seems like you might still loose some money if you offered the ad free version to your most frequent readers. I for one don't mind a small amount of non-intrusive advertising; it just gets mentally filtered out, and I don't even read it. If it gets really annoying I'll just adblock it, so it all works out in the end.

As for the technical details, you could definitely write a plugin that filters out certain posts based on whatever you want (category / tag, etc.), and there are hooks for both the regular page views and the rss feeds (there may even be one that works for both already).

It does seem kind of funny though that your .org site will be the one with ads and your .com one will be ad free. :)
