Help! as always.

Could everyone that is reading this (on windows) go here and download the demo and beta test it for me. I just fixed the runtime error and I want to make sure it works. All you will need to do is:
Download the demo
Install it
run it, by clicking the shortcut that is installed on your desktop.
After it opens close it or play around with it I don’t care
But I would like to have you open and close it a bunch of times, this way I can find out if the problem I had before is fixed.

Thanks a lot and please comment and tell me if it worked fine or if you had any problems.

Jared: Please test it again, especially since you were the only other person, then myself, that had the same error.

    You just wait.
  • love that spam
  • No problem; I opened it and closed it a couple times, I wouldn't say it was a lot, though.

PS - I'm not a sysadmin though, so don't make me name drop my real title on here to distance myself from those guys...

What good news. I can't wait until tomorrow so I can test it out.

You did open and close it a bunch of times right? Did you have to turn off HT? Did you do anything different?

    Thanks as usual.

And yes, I won't worry to much about the ini thing. unless someone complains then I will work something out. But as you said, no-one except a real systems admin will run there system that secure.
  • That latest EXE you emailed me is working fine now - I don't get that error anymore.

I do get another one, which may not be a big deal for you, but it's related to permissions. When I exit the app, I get an error when it's trying to create (or modify) the INI file, which is in the program's installation directory. This is because I always run everything as a restricted permission user, so that account does not have permission to write a file in that directory.

Like I said, this may not be a big deal for you, since most people don't run their systems in a secure configuration like I do, so they probably won't see this error. If you did want to fix it, you could have it store the INI file in the user's Application Data directory or the registry.

one of my first posts was about it. I've been wanting to play around with it for a while but just haven't wanted to or haven't found the need. Although I will install Virtual PC on my mac with 98 and xp, just so I don't have to start up my pc (I guess there is no way around it). And I have to install VPC for mac on my laptop so I can play poker.

About the 98 deal. I am using that free software to create my msi and I would have to purchase the full version to create those executables that are needed. I don't think it's that big of a deal since if someone did have 98 I could just tell them how to install it manually.

I told the coder he didn't fix anything yet and hopefully he will figure it out.

Thanks guys. I will probably need you guys next week to do the same again.
  • It might just be because 98 doesn't have the built-in capability to deal with MSI files that XP (and 2000 I believe) does. When you build the MSI, most programs will give you the option of including a small EXE that goes with it to handle those cases.

Re: not upgrading - I just keep a 98 installation in a Virtual PC session on my laptop (running XP), so that way I can test stuff like this, but actually it's mostly just a "junk" install, like I said before, for playing poker, etc. so I don't have to worry about any spyware infecting my system, etc. since the Virtual PC only has access inside it's own virtual machine, not the rest of your system. The reason I chose 98 for this particular purpose was that it is a smaller install (currently only about 600 megs).

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Virtual PC is actually pretty cool. I have fully functional installations of Win 98, 2000 Server, Open BSD, and several Linux distros that I can run whenever I need to. This is much better than dual booting, because I can keep everything else I'm working in open (in XP), and just have the other system(s) loaded in windows of their own.

Now with Win XP laptop opened and closed several times no problem.

    RE: 98 desktop
no errors came up just didn't open and then you get the " what program do you want to use list "
msi isnt on my 98 so ... does it work on 98? dont know here. Most ce programs will have some form of xp or 2000 correct?

Love the website and logo, did you make that yourself? it is a very good logo from many different considerations IMHO.

    Thanks guys.

I don't think I built the msi to install on Windows 98. I just uploaded a new one so you can test to see if it works on 98. I didn't think anyone use 98 anymore. It Sucks.

But it's good that you guys have it so you can test this out for me, so thanks for not upgrading.

If the error was after the msi installed the software then it is the application itself that is not compatible with 98, if that is the case please tell me, because originally I thought it never worked for 98 but some people told me it did so it would be nice to know the real answer.

    Thanks guys.

This probably doesnt help but this is what happened so far:

Desktop - win98 with Firefox saved as a "msi " file. Couldn't open it.
Tried again with IE, same result.

Laptop Win XP - will try later this weekend. not available at present.

Damn, could it be a hyper threading thing if it doesn't work on an AMD at my work as well? It makes sense a little because all the work computers except on that give the error have HTed chips. But that one one computer that is an AMD just confuses me unless its because I opened the app on the HTed computer first then moved it over.

I don't know. But if you are having a problem with it on a HPed computer then the problem isn't fixed.

Tell me if you have anymore probs. thanks.
  • I still got the same error. The hyper threading make sense though, since my laptop processor does hyper threading, and I've seen it have problems in other applications. I don't remember what those apps were, but they usually had a setting to disable hyper threading and when I did that they worked fine.

I will give it another try later with hyper threading turned off in the BIOS, and let you know. I also tried it in a Virtual PC session on my laptop that I use to install "testing" software on (or other stuff that might potentially screw up my real machine, like online poker software), but that is Windows 98, and it gave me an error that it can't run in Win 9x.

The problem wasn't associated with Microsoft Access, but with HyperThreading support in CPU. The exact error was in the JVCL library being used in the project. To build the application yourself you have to download version 3 of JVCL library here:
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jvcl/JVCL300...
Or I can upload it here for you (about 16 Mb). Fixed executable files of the program itself and of it's demo version were uploaded already. The source code is fixed a bit to work with version 3 of JVCL.

I don't really understand how hyperthreading has anything to do with it nor it having something to do with the JVC library (whatever that is) but as long as it works, which it might, not until you get back to me.
