When you say that this is “deprecated” – do you mean it is now possible to do this using WordPress without any plugin? Can you give me a hint as to how – or where I can find out how?

There are a lot of jQuery plugins that will do this for you. Maybe some day
I'll wrap one of them up but it's very unlikely.
