Step 1:
Insert the OS X installation DVD and plugin the USB Drive.
Step 2:
Open Disk Utility, under /Applications/Utilities.
Step 3:
Drag the “Mac OS X Install DVD” to the “Source” field
and the formated partition on your USB drive to “Destination”.
Do not drag the volumes or devices that state the size of the disk, it won’t work.
Step 4:
Click “Restore”.
You’re done.
I’m not sure if this speeds up the installation but it sure should. Whether it does or does this process still helps.

[...] figure that out I wouldn’t need to transfer the disc at all. I followed the instructions here (Creating OS X Leopard Install USB Drive
hi,
do i need a specially formatted and freshly erased usb drive ? or ca i use any disk without erasing it ?
thks
you will need to repartition the entire partition.
I tried this method and I installed it on my macbook and it worked perfectly. Then i tried on my macbook pro and everytime somewhere during installation it freezes, the bar stops moving and I cant click on any of the menu bars. Anyone ever experienced something like this?

If I partition it into two and restore the image to the first partition, it fails.
i'm having the same problem.
were you able to fix this?
I hypothesize that it has to to with USB vs. FireWire.
man Thank is great and cool, i will try this tonight. get efix dongle to make your custom Mac
no patching at all. worked too good, i got it from http://www.efixusa.com but those guys are out..find out at http://www.efi-x.com whoever is the new distributor for them.
Oh. But that's MUCH easier on a PC.
is that bootable? if it is not, could you tell me how can i do that?
not really – printscreen + paint + save as.. where on Mac one shortcut create a capture and place the image on your desktop. I use both mac and pc, and it take MUCH longer to create resize captures on windows.
I'm getting this error message, that says error(2) on it…can someone tell me how to fix this?
Make sure your usb drive is bootable before you start the above explenation:
- Go to disk utility tool
- Select your usb drive
- Click partition
- Select 1 partition
- Select the proper boot option with the Option button (Intel Mac need the GUID partition)
- Select Apply, the stick will be automatically formatted after partitioning
Now the stick is bootable, proceed with the above explenation.
windows can if its networked…. you can map it similar to windows file sharing…
Thnx
This method seems to be working fine for me. (i hour left on installment as I write) In my case I made the bootable usb-drive on a MBP (intel), to install leopard on a powerbook g4 -so I first had to put the powerbook g4 in target disc mode and make an apple partition (not GUID). You don’t need to to that if it is already partitioned (but I screwed up partitions on the G4 since I’m a newly mac converter)
cheers!
That will be perfect if you DON’T have a MacBook Air with only one USB drive wich is going to be used with the Superdrive so you can read the DVD….
so convert it into a dmg file on your hard drive.
fail! I keep getting error 254.
Installation took 24 min.
Ok, I am in trouble and more Mac illiterate than I thought. I’ve never opened a disk utility. I’ve never made a partition. I am clueless. All I know is I’m running Tiger. I currently have no money for an upgrade and so may things on the web I want won’t work for me because my OS is too old. PLEASE help me.
