With the expected announcement of the 3G iPhone next week I wont be too disappointed, since 3G is supported in the blue area on the map below and we live in the orange, also known as the tough shit zone.

Or maybe I will because I’ll figure I need high speed outside of my house. Let me check my work where it makes most sense…damn I am going to want the 3g iphone after all, maybe.

  • Having used it (even though it's been less than 24 hours), I can tell you pretty much for sure that you will want it.

Since browsing is the main feature of the iPhone, it would benefit from the speed boost greatly.

Even assuming Apple will charge you an arm and a leg for it, it might be worth it.

You could always go to the store and try it out there, just to get a feel for it.
  • I do have plenty of time so I'll look at my habits first. One things for sure is I want more space, 3g would come in second since I see myself browsing more at home or at places with wifi then out-and-about. And that's not because it could be faster either.

Also, I'm guessing 3g would be an update so it wouldn't cost more than the current iPhone.
  • When you say "update" you still mean a new device, though right?

I'm assuming the current one doesn't have the right hardware for 3G data, although that would be one heck of an easter egg if it did and they could turn it on with a firmware update.

It will be interesting to see, though, even if the new device is the same price, because (assuming it's soon) people are going to go crazy again. First the very quick price drop, and now the relatively quick obsoleting of the expensive phone they just bought. I can almost hear the screaming starting already. :)
  • New model. That's why I said "announce" not release.
  • Yeah, that's what I thought.

So, do you think people are going to be pissed again (ala the quick price drop)?

I could definitely see people getting really angry that they waited till after the holidays (to cash in on the sales bump to unload the old models) and then release a model that everyone is going to want.
  • That's why I said announce. They have to announce a future release in a few months. That should alleviate anyone being too upset.
  • Ah, I see
  • DaveZ
How odd that right around you there isn't coverage?
    Freakie.
Looks like I will have 3G coverage available.
That will be good for when I get a 3G phone.
  • Yeah, having it at your house isn't too big a deal, since you could always use wifi there.

It's funny though; since I've been using mine, I usually don't even bother turning the wifi on even when I'm around the house, since the 3G is so fast.
  • I only watched the 60 second version you posted, but did they not announce the 3G iPhone?
  • They didn't but I still think they're going to announce one shortly because in order to get it on the market they have to send it through the FCC whom loves to take a lot of picks and provide info to engadget and other sites. And we both know Apple doesn't like anyone other than themselves announcing future releases.
  • Good point, but does that mean that the rumor itself may not be as reliable?

I would think that if they had any plans to announce it anytime soon they would have just done it at this show, because what better opportunity will they have in the near future?

I definitely think they should do it, but maybe they're just not ready yet for some reason.
  • They got a lot of grief last year for making MacWorld an iPod/iPhoneWorld and they probably don't want to diffuse the Air but who knows.

The ATT President said there will be a 3g phone in 08 so that's as reliable as you're going to get when dealing with Apple.
  • I think it goes back to my original line of thinking - I think they would take a lot of heat if they had made that announcement this soon.

Let this year should give everyone a chance to breathe a little bit and wear in their current purchases before Apple springs another one on them. I think announcing it this month (even if it would be released in Q1 or Q2) would be too soon to avoid that flack.

Of course, you could also make the point that they probably don't care too much about that kind of flack, unless they're afraid that too many quick upgrade releases will make people hesitant to jump in as early adopters in the future.

They're in a hard place, because not having 3G is a huge and obvious flaw for a device of that caliber, given what it's designed to do. It would be a huge benefit, and I'm sure a lot of current iPhone owners would take the plunge, if they use the browser a lot and if they've seen how fast 3G is compared to EDGE.
  • Can't wait!

I held back on getting the first iphone because of the network...

However Apple doesn't allow flash on the iphone, so that still may be a deal breaker on the next iphone :(

    sad indeed.
