Xtorrent.

I’ve been using Xtorrent for the last week and I’m so glad someone has finally made an elegant yet powerful bittorrent client for OS X. To me all bittorrent clients are the same unless you want the full capabilities of Azuras but this is so simple. So the simple thing that I don’t see other apps doing. Search. Xtorrent searches Google, yahoo and I’m not sure what other directory it searches but I’ve gotten torrents from Piratebay to Mininova. There’s also the normal configurations including adding your own search directories. One other feature I love, limiting bandwidth of the app during the daytime while at night it’s free to reign. If you have a mac I’d definitely recommend it and with it in beta it’s bound to improve even more.

I was downloading some items on xtorrent (Pro). I upgraded to the xtorrent2 and now i can not openit. Every time i try it appears the items i was downloading but i can not operate to delete them.I tried to eliminate all from the computer and everytime i try to download new xtorrent2 those items appear again
  • jojo
remove entries from your doanload! xtorrent will run much better!
  • uLy
ok, i've been using xtorrent for a while and it was pretty decent. However, now the damn thing wont even work. Everytime i open it, it freezes immediately! i've tried deleting, reinstalling, but nothing works.

it just freezes every single time...
  • Joe
I have been having exactly the same problem. I empathize and stand bewildered right alongside you, uLy. I recognize and share your frustration. Every time Xtorrent gets really going, just doing something simple like selecting a file will cause the whole program to FREEZE, and the "Spinning Pizza Wheel Of Death" appears and begins spinning to infinity until I FORCE QUIT the program. I'm rapidly getting bitter about having paid for this thing. Strange that it was fine for about three months. Then one day BAM and ever since I've witnessed one overdose of the pizza-wheel after another. And no one seems to have a solution.
  • See the comments above; the typical home router is often a bottleneck for torrents, because it can't manage so many simultaneous connections. I recommend getting a dedicated firewall / router box, running pfsense or IPCop.
  • Richard
I am having the same problem, used it successfully for a while and really like it as I don't have to deal with or even understand the complexities of torrents but now it seems to completely shut down all applications using the internet including itself. Once I stop it they return to normal.
  • Marcelo: i'm willing to bet you're on an Airport Extreme network. I had the same problem, but it is with ANY bit torrent software.

Change your IPv6 settings from "Tunnel" to "Local Link" and the problem disappears. (i know this comment comes a little late, but hopefully it'll be helpful to SOMEONE.)
  • Aaron
how do you change from tunnel to local link?

flat out xtorrent sucks. I bought it but it is not worth the $$$. It is extremely slow.
  • Matt
Bit torrent is the best torrent client for mac IMO.

The first major drawback of Xtorrent is that it is not free, which is extremely unusual and awkward for a BitTorrent client. In addition, Xtorrent has a very intrusive shareware policy. If you do not register the application, a floating window that you cannot close gets stuck on your screen, and searches randomly start to fail. To make things even worse, it seems like the application throttles the available bandwidth to 10kbps after an hour of usage.

The second drawback is that Xtorrent’s core is made up of the libtransmission library. This library is known to hammer trackers, and is banned from an increasing number of them, which makes Xtorrent useless for members of Oink, for example.

If you decide to buy Xtorrent you’re mostly paying for the (stunningly) beautiful user-interface, not because its download speeds are the best or because it is the lightest BitTorrent client available for the Mac. Azureus still leads by a wide margin in download speeds, and Transmission is hands down the lightest BitTorrent client for the Mac.

Xtorrent looks good, it integrates well with iTunes, has iPod support and subscribes to RSS feeds. But to be completely honest, it just doesn’t seem like it’s worth the money.

Yes, it has a pretty interface, but it's an awful program, and it's $24 overpriced. Why would anyone pay money for a bad Torrent client when there are already a ton of much better alternatives available – for free!? I bought an Acquisition license in the past, but what Mr. Watanabe has done with Xtorrent really makes me question whether I'd continue to support him in the future.

    Marcelo,

What equipment do you use to connect to the internet? I use a Linksys switch, an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (the latest model) and a cable modem. Following Maz'z posting I restarted the Aieport Extreme (though I am sure I have done this while the problem exhibited itself) and this time the problem seems to have been cleared. Interestingly I have a friend who uses the same Airport Extreme Base Station and he has not had the same problem (though his XTorrent downloads seems to be considerably slower anyway).
  • Maz
    Dan

I'll take your bet. Because the reason is that XTorrent uses a lot of TCP space, and the typical domestic router becomes the bottleneck.

So how do you limit the number of connections in XTorrent? Find the answer to that question and you have solved the problem.

    Beyond belief.

It's me again, I just want you to know that I love Xtorrent, and even when it gives me hard times using it, I didn´t change it and I don´t want to. What I like is to know if there is any solucion to the problem. Maybe is 'cause I download too many files at once, or perhaps is some server I am connecting to ( I mean, Xtorrent connects, I don´t know how to choose servers or that kind of stuff).
Anyway, I am happy with the program, and I 'd be twice as happy if the problems were fixed...
    Thanks anyway.
    PD: I don`t lie
  • Dan
Well now I might believe you two but I've run Xtorrent on up to 5 different systems, all different without a problem. On separate networks to boot.

I bet your ISP is somehow blocking you rather than the app, unless you can get on the internet with another computer on the same network.
  • Mac
    Dan,

I'm sorry that you feel so ill-mannered as to claim not to BELIEVE Marcelo's posting. I have had exactly the same internet blocking problem on my Intel iMac. I moved XTorrent to my G5 iMac on the same network and now find that this machine is showing exactly the same symptoms after running XTorrent for about a month. It seems that your unwillingness to believe geniune symptoms is not strong enough to stop them occurring anyway. I would be interested to know if anyone else has seen the problem Marcelo reported, and has managed to find a solution or workaround. Has anyone ever received a reply from the software writer to any question raised? Do not let Dan's disbelief put you off reporting problems.
  • incubus
does anyway know a) why xtorrent might freeze right after startup and b) how to optimize/quicken downloads?
  • Dan
Marelo: Sorry but I don't believe you one bit.
  • Marcelo
I´ve been using Xtorrent for a while and I've had some problems, but not to many until now. When Xtorrent is connected, the rest of my internet applications start failing, as well as the others machines in my network. The other big problem I'm having is that it seems Xtorrent is using most of my 1.5Gb Ram, and I can't run other apps while using it. The data loss problem I have suffered once, but not every time Xtorrent quits inexpectedly.
  • Mike
Xtorrent is a very elegant Bittorrent client, yet it has many flaws. Its built in search engine tends to take away bandwidth from torrents that you are currently downloading. Its interface is light and OS X worthy, yet there are too many advanced features that are not user changeable.
Also, if Xtorrent was to quit unexpectedly, ie. system freeze, kernal panic, power outage, etc..
The data of the file you are downloading is at risk. I downloaded a 5GB torrent before, and when my system crashed, I had to reboot. When I reopened Xtorrent, it reported that only 300MB of the file was downloaded. I decided to test this, and forced Xtorrent to quit with numerous torrents open. The result was the same. Data loss. Its one step above others when it comes to interface design, but with actual performance, there are many flaws to fix.
