TV Redux

I’m having a tough time figuring out my TV situation. There are so many factors and so many price variations all with different cost benifits. More importantly, what we need vs. what we want. Oh, I guess what Sara wants is most important. Some items in my variations include:
Apple TV
New Vizio TV
Tivo Series 3
HD Over-the-Air antenna
HD Tuner (for current TV)
Component Switch
Wall mount kit

And the variations all include no cable bill but with having to buy new equipment that benefit of no bill only helps after 8-12 months. I wish we didn’t love time shifted HD TV so much. Heed my problems and don’t go HD, it’s too expensive.

I’m really into switching our TV around downstairs no matter what it takes. Mounting it on a swivel on the north wall and having the couch under the window. Clearing up a lot of space to maximize a 4 player session of Wii Sports/Play since the TV can face south to the open floor. I wish our downstairs wasn’t so small and oddly laid out.

  • I hear you Michele! This is what Martha and I deal with when these two get together.

I just thought about this but a PS3 running linux would be the perfect media center machine. It's small, relatively cheap, extremely fast even with the 256mb and full HD all around. Interesting, now if it would only drop a few hundred in price so I could buy it.
  • Myth can capture HD as long as it gets it from somewhere; so yes, if you wanted to record HD yourself you would need an HD tuner and receiver still.

However, you and I (and everyone else) know there are plenty of other options for getting most HD shows you'd want onto your MythBox, often within an hour or so of when they air live.
  • Dan
Totally. How does Myth handle OTA HD? The big thing is the pvr needs a tuner and reciever.
  • JaredB
Yeah, but I can't see Apple (being a huge proponent of DRM) ever making a device that's "free" enough for my tastes.

I really wish I understood what you're talking about.
  • Dan
And the Apple TV was supposed to be that MythTV of sorts IF it would just play a bunch of different codecs in high-def which I anticipated it would since Front Row does.
  • Dan
No it doesn't but I was thinking the same thing. I could either do a Mini with front row or Linux or even go with Windows Media Center.
  • JaredB
    Just use MythTV. :)

Does your current TV have VGA in?
