Superman Returns

Superman Returns was pretty good. I’ll give it a five star review when Sara puts it on Netflix.

I don’t know how much the movie followed the mythos of Superman since anything goes in comic adaptive movies now-a-days, and instead of ruining most of the movie for the people who haven’t seen it, the main development of the movie was cool. I think I’m going to like the new run of movies to follow.

With Batman Begins bringing back the dark night the right way and with Superman Returns coming back strong I think the near future for most major comic movies will be great. Seems DC is rocking Marvel on the movie scene.

  • If we're thinking of the same thing (trying not to spoil it makes it difficult to discuss), I do think it was a pretty big twist. Not a classic "plot twist", but definitely a "twist" or alternate take on the classic story of the character.
  • nstryker
that wasn't really a twist though, unless jorgeq is normally surprized when the girl gets the boy or when the hero wins.
  • The twist as in the part that's different from the traditional stories, probably. I think that may have happened in some obscure story at one point (and it's likely it has, since there have been so many Superman stories over the years, set in alternate realities, etc.), but never in this mainstream of a story, that I can remember.

    there's a twist?
  • That's exactly how I felt after my screening of it. All CGI aside, the movie was good but I believe there could have been more done with the plot although the twist is great.
  • If that was spam, they should spell their URL correctly. :)

As for the movie, I'm with you - I think it was easily the best Superman movie so far. DC is beginning to get the edge (over Marvel) in terms of comic book movies, especially if you count V, since that was originally printed (in the US) by DC. The only thing they have going against them, if you're looking at the good with the bad, is all the previous Batman movies (with the possible exception the first one), which will take a lot to overcome.

Without spoiling anything, I also agree that the one development that was kind of a surprise and a new take was pretty cool, and done well (if we're thinking of the same one). I liked it because (at least in all the previews I saw) they didn't even show that character, so it came as more of a surprise coming into the movie, and then as the story develops you immediately begin to suspect it, but they wait quite a while to confirm or deny it.

Of course the quality of the effects was much better than the other Superman movies, which is to be expected. I really liked the shot in the eye thing. It's cool that they have progressed to the point where they can do these things well.

In terms of comic book movie effects, though, I still have my doubts about the upcoming FF sequel, which is supposed to guest star the Silver Surfer (and I'm assuming Galactus, if the SS angle is done well). Those are two characters which I can't really see the effects being able to do justice to yet, so either I will be surprised with a level of CG that I haven't seen in a movie yet, or really disappointed in that movie.
