New Pownce Tools

Curious why Bownce doesn’t provide an RSS feed.

Since we opened our API, developers have been creating cool new ways to utilize Pownce. A few new ones you may want to check out:

Bownce
Interested in seeing who has replied to notes after you and what they are saying? Bownce helps gather your replies in a convient page. It is designed to enhance the experience of keeping up with notes on Pownce. (Bownce also has OAuth implemented!).

FirePownce & Fownce
Two different Firefox plugins that allow you to easily post notes to Pownce. FirePownce can send messages, links, files and events to Pownce through auto-submission via the website. Fownce interfaces with Firefox to post messages and links to Pownce without having to go to the Pownce site. Both are great!

PownceWar
PownceWar tracks the popularity of users on Pownce with a featured list of the top 100, sorted by gender, country, active or all.

Shareaholic Pownce integration
Shareaholic makes it easy for you to submit the web page you’re on to your favorite sharing or bookmarking service. You also have the option to e-mail the web page directly to a friend. Check it out at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5457

About the Author, Dan Cameron:

I'm the owner and solution engineer at Sprout Venture, a web solutions company that specializes in web development including WordPress.

I started my first blog in 2003 and transitioned to WordPress in 2004. Since moving to WordPress I've written a few plugins and themes for public consumption. Lately I'm busy engineering/building/coding and have only been able to share a few code snippets.

If you're in need of some web development, web design or custom WordPress plugins and/or themes contact me, I'll be happy to discuss it with you.

  • Yeah, it would be great if someone would make an add-on app that would allow you to actually follow comment conversations in Pownce in an easier way.

Although I am using it for what I'm doing on my blog, I haven't looked into the API enough to determine what the comment support is like. I've always planned to do comment syncing as a "phase 2" of what I did on my blog, but who knows if I'll ever get time for that.

Maybe once I get around to doing that, I'll put something together that's more general purpose for exposing Pownce comments outside of their walled garden, if it's possible with the API.
  • Pownce (and FriendFeed) allow the comments to be exposed. I say that Pownce
does because that Bownce app was built around the comment API and if you
authorize them you can see they've done a good job at showing the
conversations for you, regardless if it's you're own posts or anothers that
    you commented on.
  • Yeah, Bownce is somewhat interesting in that it gives you one more thing than what Pownce shows you in th UI, but it would still be missing some things for me.

IIRC, the Pownce web UI normally only shows you comments on your own posts, plus comments you make on other posts (but only your comments on those)

Sounds like Bownce adds the other comments from posts that you've commented on. That's a step closer to what I think is needed, but I think it (the Pownce experience) still needs the following:

    1. Comments from friends posts that you haven't commented on yet, and might not choose to comment on.

    2. Some access to this stream of comment data from outside of the Pownce (or Bownce) web UI; like you said - RSS would be good.
  • Oh yeah, and I suspect you're right re: the API - you could get at all that stuff, so hopefully it is only a matter of time before someone does it.
