Home / asides / gmail Warning
I’ve already brought this up in the past but I just can’t get over how awesome gmail is for the “Average” user because people would look past the awful grammar and log0in with their eBay information.
Thanks Google.
Yeah, that is pretty nice. It would be really cool if their “Gmail for domains” thing let you host the mail yourself rather than them; if they did that I would probably use it.
That’s crazy and I doubt would ever happen. That’s like just giving you the gmail client and I don’t think they’d want to ever do that.
I don’t think it’s “crazy”, but I agree that it will probably never happen. There are ways they could make it viable, but there would be too many additional support problems to make it worthwhile.
I wasn’t really expecting that they would - more just pointing out why I wouldn’t switch to it as my primary e-mail account.
you don’t trust them?
No he doesn’t trust any service that O’Reilly doesn’t have an admin guide for or any service that’s deemed cool or mainstream. He’s punk rock for tech.
It’s not that I don’t trust them - I do (at least for right now); I just don’t want to get tied to a particular address that they own and I can’t do what I want with.
If that’s the case then you can use gmail with any e-mail address you do own. I used to use this but I’ve stopped months back because I knew if my domain was lost, down or sold that gmail would always be there. In my opinion the gmail domain is more dependable, it may not be reliable because they might pull a M$ and charge later but surely right now it’s a great option.
word, dan.

More dependable than what? I think gmail has a great UI and is an excellent option for people who don’t want to manage their own mail servers, don’t get me wrong on that point.
BUT, if you do know how to run a mail server on your own domain, I don’t think GMail would necessarily be any more “dependable”, especially when you factor in the reality (as you mentioned) that they could start charging you at any time. There is also the fact that they have the right to do pretty much whatever they want with the contents of your e-mail, whether you like it or not, as well as the right to restrict your use of the mail system (including the actual content of your messages) to fit within what they deem as appropriate.
Given all those concerns, I certainly understand that some may regard the benefits as outweighing the drawbacks (and some may not even really consider them serious drawbacks), which is fine with me; I’m just saying that it’s not worth the trade-off for me personally.
