Facebook apps

The repercussion of contributing to a community through developing apps.

About the Author, Dan Cameron:

I'm the owner and solution engineer at Sprout Venture, a web solutions company that specializes in web development including WordPress.

I started my first blog in 2003 and transitioned to WordPress in 2004. Since moving to WordPress I've written a few plugins and themes for public consumption. Lately I'm busy engineering/building/coding and have only been able to share a few code snippets.

If you're in need of some web development, web design or custom WordPress plugins and/or themes contact me, I'll be happy to discuss it with you.

  • From the interview it sounds like he started it just to provide a useful service to the community. It wasn't clear to me whether he initially intended to make money off it.

Either way, though, I think he's in a good place, because he can either make quite a bit of money off it now if he'd like to, or he could just release it under an open license and give the gift he originally intended. Either way, it doesn't need to cost him money anymore.

I don't know there's trade-offs either way. And it all depends on his original intention. Whether it was to give a gift to the community or actually make it profitable or a break even adventure.

I just don't think he could monetize it. It's sounds to simple for someone to buy on their own. And it's a lot of money to just give away, let alone the time for support and developement.

I wish him luck. I do think Facebook should provide the server support for these popular developers and actually cut them some kind of check depending on how many people sign up for there apps. Or at least provide some kind of tooling for them to create revenue.
  • That's the kind of problem that's good to have. If he can't (or doesn't want to) monetize it himself to keep it up & running, he can always sell it to someone who will, or just give it an open license and let it go, so that someone else can keep it going.
