The repercussion of contributing to a community through developing apps.
That’s the kind of problem that’s good to have. If he can’t (or doesn’t want to) monetize it himself to keep it up & running, he can always sell it to someone who will, or just give it an open license and let it go, so that someone else can keep it going.
I don’t know there’s trade-offs either way. And it all depends on his original intention. Whether it was to give a gift to the community or actually make it profitable or a break even adventure.
I just don’t think he could monetize it. It’s sounds to simple for someone to buy on their own. And it’s a lot of money to just give away, let alone the time for support and developement.
I wish him luck. I do think Facebook should provide the server support for these popular developers and actually cut them some kind of check depending on how many people sign up for there apps. Or at least provide some kind of tooling for them to create revenue.
From the interview it sounds like he started it just to provide a useful service to the community. It wasn’t clear to me whether he initially intended to make money off it.
Either way, though, I think he’s in a good place, because he can either make quite a bit of money off it now if he’d like to, or he could just release it under an open license and give the gift he originally intended. Either way, it doesn’t need to cost him money anymore.
