Home / blog / Modify Firefox 1.5 to work with all extensions

For all of those who just downloaded Firefox 1.5 and can’t get your extensions to work. This is a simple modification of Firefox’s configuration to trick the extensions to work. No need to manually edit the extensions to get them to work. Currently all the extensions I use work except the bookmark sync extension that I so dearly want to.

  1. At the location bar, enter: about:config. This will show you a list of Firefox internal preferences.
  2. Right-click on the list, select New > String
Enter “app.extensions.version (without quotes) for the preference name.
  3. Then, enter “1.0 (without quotes) as the value for app.extensions.version.
  4. Restart Firefox 1.5, then enable those disabled Firefox extensions.
  5. Restart Firefox 1.5 again to active the extensions. Done.

Personally I think this is the best solution because you can always go back and delete the string later rather then fiddling with the extensions.

[UPDATE]

if you change 1.0 back to 1.5 Spoofstick [and potentially others] will continue to work and can also look for updates.

Thanks wgc

Nowadays people are aware of online business and for that many of them are making web development plans. If you are thinking of making one of the web design and donít know what type of extension host providers give support to then donít worry; the web site hosting, works with almost all types of extensions. One can upload and delete any thing from their site. The host providers not only provide site builder website tools but also provide complete marketing facilities as well. Like affiliation programs, adsense, Links, banners are all part of their internet marketing plan.

Dan, what are extensions? Are you talking about bookmarks? They are working. I am using the newest Firefox and installed it this afternoon.
    Thanks,
    dAVE
  • Dan
They're like add-ons. Check them out here.

I plan to do a little extension roundup soon, so check back. Good to see you back.
  • Of course, this will prevent you from using any new plugins that only work on 1.5, but I guess for right now that makes sense.

Hey, whatever happened to Flock? I thought you were using that now.
  • Dan
I'm fed up with how Flock does bookmarks. Until they fix it I will be using the trusty old FF.

thx for the tip i tryed this works gr8 could you tell me how to hack the skin version numbers so i can use my longhorn skin or will this not work?
  • mudshark
You can get the Bookmark Sync extension to work if you install it using the Nightly Tester Tools extension.
  • This will, however, disable all extensions only for Firefox 1.5, like foXpose.

I hope this doesn't mess with the User Agent String. ;)

    Thanks man!

Thanks, I looked at your link and I don't think I have any extensions. I'll check it out later.
    Thanks,
  • FYI, didn't work for "minimize to tray" extension.

when i reloaded the browser it said to make sure I had the proper binary DLL or something like that.

just wanted to let u know.

The extension, Foxyvoice, also will NOT work with this method.
  • wgc
... but Spoofstick will work with this method. Also if you change 1.0 back to 1.5 Spoofstick will continue to work and can also look for updates. We tried this earlier as this digg is a duplicate of an earlier digg but more detailed.
  • works nice other than "minimize to tray"
but there is always bugs when modifing anything.
    Thanks for the tip.

I looked at my config file, and there are tons of entries for extensions that I've tried, then ditched.

Can I get rid of these? Are they slowing things down by being there? How do I remove the offending entries?

    Thanks

You didn't create this, someone else discovered this several days before! Always cite your sources and where you got it from, the post you made makes it appear like you discovered this which I highly doubt.
  • Dan
    Angry:
I did, you didn't notice the "Original" link above? FYI: I found it weeks ago.

    ahodge:
I don't think the entries really matter since they most likely are only used by the extension itself and not Firefox itself. I'm probably wrong but I wouldn't delete them.
