1. Dancameron.org on the iPhone

    It took just about 40 seconds for the full page to load on ATTs edge which is pretty fast compared to my Curve which takes just about as long without rendering proper html.Even the ajax style switcher worked which wasn’t surprising since it is safari but it was nice to see the css change … Read More »

  2. iPhone restricts users, GPLv3 frees them

    I wonder what Tivo and Apple are going to do with today’s new release of the GPL, version 3. Because it descriminates against “Tivoization”.

    “Tivoization” is a term coined by the FSF to describe devices that are built with free software, but that use technical measures to prevent the user from making modifications to the software—a fundamental freedom for free software users—and an attack on free software that the GPLv3 will put a stop to.

    I’d hate to see Tivo go down for this, they are already making little to no profit as it is and with a forced restriction free update to their software will not help them land any major deals. Since copyright holders love restrictions. And I could eventually see this hurting the overall free software “community” becuase what other major company would willingly restrict at any cost, Microsoft would.

    I don’t see Apple having too much problem with this since at one point had the core of OS X “open” to a certain extent and they could do it again. And if the iPhone runs like the AppleTV it’s practically OS X at it’s core anyways. Either way, they’ll be able to get out of it somehow and it should be a healthy cahnge for everyone.

    On the other hand, good luck Tivo.

  4. Apple MacBook Supports more than 2gbs of Ram

    Continuing off this tweet about putting 3 gigs of ram in my Macbook, it’s true the Macbook does support more than 2 gigs of RAM.

    I want to check to see if 4 gigs will show up but I don’t have the time right now, maybe tonight when my systems are down.

    You’ll notice in the image that the Apple is either wrong (which I doubt) or just misleading the consumer.

    macbook-ram.jpg

    *The highlighted red portion is taken from the Macbook Pro specs to compare.

    The specs are simply misleading. Although there could be an actual RAM module that supports 4gbs, leading to the Macbook Pro supporting 8 gigs total while the Macbook supports 4 but I doubt that was their intent.

    Because during the checkout process you’re faced with a limit on the Macbook of a 2GBs upgrade,

    mb-ram.png

    while the Macbook Pro has the limit of a 4gbs upgrade.

    pro.png

    It looks to me their trying to force the prosumer to purchase the pro model by misleading them to believe the Macbook only supports 2gbs of RAM. They sure fooled me because when I bought my Macbook I stressed over that 2gb limit. And I only tried the 2gb chip upgrade because I was about to upgrade the Pro to 4gbs and my macbook was off just sitting there.

    Shame on you Apple even though it’s not any worse than a phone without physical keys.

  5. Goodbye…

    I’m purging my online identity to just a few locations that I actually use since it was getting out of control. The major account escape that led to the purge was myspace, as you might have noticed if I’m a friend of yours. The others include:

    • tumblr – It’s a great “blog” service that compiles a lot of your online feeds into one online log. I liked the idea but it’s not something I see people using (for me) since if their my friend they can see my feed at facebook.
    • last.fm – I never used this as much as I wanted. I think it still get’s my iPod updates but that will stop very soon.
    • myspace – Not only did I rarely use myspace I never liked it, I actually hated it. The navigation is obnoxious to say the least and facebook is now my  “social network” of choice.
    • virb – I was pushed into using it.
    • CoComment – An awesome idea especially since I originally had the idea a long time ago. But I find that it doesn’t work very well unless the blog integrate it (which is a very few).
    • digg.com – Ever since the DVD hex code debacle I’ve come to the conclusion that community is a bunch of childish kids; and the founders aren’t making it any better.

    On the chopping block

    • Newsvine – Wonderful news site that should have replaced digg but where digg strives in minimalism (for those kids) newsvine is too cluttered with content.
    • aim – If I could I’d shut it off now but some people still use it.
    • del.icio.us – This is one of those services that I love but I’m just not using it. Namely becuase I can’t stand having it clogged up with bookmarks I know I’ll never comeback to. I’m also curious to find out if Google bookmarks is going to incorporate into Google Reader since I do star a lot of feeds already.

    The ones I’ll keep:

    • This site (of course) – It’s my ultimate online presence.
    • Twitter – Something that’s already a major extension of this site for mobile/short posts and is integrated into my next service…
    • Facebook – I’m a new user but I’m definitely enjoying myself. And with the apps I can play and develop at the same time. Better yet I can include my other online presences into one, just like my blog.
    • Flickr – I wont be leaving flickr anytime soon.
    • Google Reader Shared – Something that I’m sure no one is subscribed to but I love putting it out there for the one who might.
    • Google Talk – I’m one GTalk 24/7 through my BB and I love the features and client. Chat history rocks.

    There are more but as you can tell there are way to many listed already.

  6. Permalinks Migration

    I changed up my permalinks to be more SEO friendly just now. Since WP 2.0 I’ve been wanting to change the permalinks on the site but never did because when that upgrade was released WPs use of the .htaccess file was completely reworked (for the better). At that time I didn’t have the hours to create a plugin to provide the migration and in the meantime I just placed it aside since it didn’t bother me enough. Well, tonight after a 2 minute Google search I was able to find someone already did the hard work and released Permalinks Migration Plugin. I completed the migration in a fraction of what it’s going to take to get this post published. I love WP; the engine and the community.

    Now, I’m using the more sensible structure:

    /%category%/%postname%/

  7. Google Talk Button

    How to create you’re own Google Talk button without using the Google script.

    Originally Google gives site owners this code:

    <script src='http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/button'></script>

    It’s easy to use but I prefer the below code in order to create an inline style for a Wordpress Widget.

    <img
    style="cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;" src="http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/popout-gadgetbutton.png"
    onClick="open('http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/popout',

    resizable=1,scrollbars=0')">

    My scheduled SVN update worked this morning so I don’t have to worry about upgrading to WordPress 2.2.1 but you might if you haven’t already; it’s a required update.
