1. Google Reader as a Digg killer

    What a wonderful idea.

If Google Reader aggregated and displayed how many people Shared each post and then calculated the most popular ones and displayed them in a separate label (like they have for Stared and Shared) they could have a feature that kills Digg!

Only if more people used Google Reader then Digg. The other problem would be that the … Read More »

  2. Steve Jobs’ stock options ‘not approved by ...

“Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, was handed 7.5m stock options in 2001 without the required authorisation from the company’s board of directors, according to people familiar with the matter. Records that purported to show a full board meeting had taken place to approve Mr Jobs’ remuneration…were later falsified.”

Sounds like Steve didn’t learn from the Enron scandal or … Read More »

  3. PHOTO: Stack of (7) PS3’s at BestBuy not being so...

I’ve seen so many PS3s here in Boise with the same result of no Wii. Everyone wants a Wii and noone wants a PS3, even eBay is selling them at a lose. And it seems JasonB has changed his mind about the PS3 because months back he was all about it but know he’s struggling like NStryker to find a … Read More »

  4. Zelda Twilight Princess hidden content

Looks like Nintendo left out some Zelda content for the final game like a forest that looks really cool. I wonder if they’d develop the levels further and release them as additional content downloads but the game is so damn long already. At least, or at least it seems as though they won’t intentionally leave levels out to sell them … Read More »

  5. Parallels an OS X app not a Win app.

Jason has some questions about the Parallels and I have to bring up that the new Beta release is combining windows with OS X in a fashion that’s not half bad. The new coherence makes it so much easier to work with those few apps that you must have to run, with the ability to launch apps from the OS X dock and only have the windows app window show it’s not half bad to work on Win anymore.

Let me tell you if you’ve messed with VMs before Parallels’ coherence makes the experience completely different. Imagine if you needed to run uTorrent; instead of starting a VM session in a little window and being contained to that window you now can just launch the uTorrent icon from the dock and uTorrent is the only thing you see.

The Boot camp integration is something exciting as well since you can run Windows in a non-virtual environment and later work with the same os in a VM session in windows. I haven’t ran any tests but doing this should make the VM run a little faster since the disk is NTFS formated and not some special emulated disk.

The other features that were newly added like drag and drop file sharing is a huge convenience too.

Even though Parallels makes it easier for us to handle the issue of the rare windows necessity it still doesn’t help with the darn security updates, win updates and the paranoia you need to run a manageable Win box.

  6. Wii holiday

Bringing the Wii with us to Boise for the holiday was of course a hit. Our cousins have been playing, one who’s 3.5 bowled a turkey his first three throws. Pretty amazing since he didn’t even know where the buttons were. Check flickr later.

Zelda has been a great night cap for me. With it being an hour ahead of CA I stay up to 1am with everyone else snoring away they don’t realize I’m on a mission to save Zelda and get the third shadow mask.

On Friday the Opera browser was released. It passes the Acid 2 test which is impressive but the rendering and load times are excellent. This site actually looks like it’s supposed to. Youtube, as you might have heard is the best thing ever. Video sites like Youtube and Google video are going to get a lot more of our attention. Lately they they both haven’t been sites to browse, now it’s going to be fun to just channel surf.

Soon I’ll be setting up a wii portal with wordpress and this plugin that Jared directed me to. It’ll be nice to just have a bunch of bookmarks, new links and video’s all in one place to quickly go to.

For the many that want a Wii for Christmas and don’t, I’m sorry.

  7. Christmas ‘06

With Christmas coming with one night’s sleep I’d like to thank all of you. Not the “you” that Time magazine refers to but the people that actually read my site or know me personally that don’t bother to come here because I geek out too much. Thank you.

We’ve had a great year and these last few days have followed suit. We’re just relaxing and enjoying it. I’ve posted nothing just keeping up with my feeds and e-mail on the downtime and I’m surprised. Normally I’d be filling more time on the computer. Instead it’s here and there and loving my girls and enjoying the view.

The picture below was taken last night at some garden of lights thing here in Boise. It’s not great but the only one with us three that looked presentable enough. The rest are coming to flickr soon.

  9. OpenVZ

Something Jared and I have been talking about is getting our own server and running OpenVZ or another opensource alternative. Here’s a great tutorial on OpenVZ and how to install it.

Virtualization is nice! A good practice for servers, since it makes things more secure, scalable, replacable, and replicable. All this at the cost of little added complexity. … Read More »
